Is this a apolone spinefera florida soft shell or is this a chinese soft shell due to the white neck, underside and legs? Not sure as all the searches have them changing patterns as they age. This one I acquired is 7" in shell length. This is all new to me and so far I'm enjoying the visuals. Other than the pattern on top, the white tone for the legs, neck and underside should be a good give away on species ID.

Also, is it a male based on patterns and tail length? Thanks all.

Here is a better photo. So far no aggression issue with his/her tankmates. What species it and is a male or female? Experts or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I'll try to get a photo with softshell in the pic. So, far very docile and likes to burrow into the sand. Saw it earlier eating massivore pellets and floating hikari gold along with my fishes. Funny looking site if you ask me.

In order to sex, we need a pic of it's underneath tail area.

In adult males, the vent is beyond the carapace when the tail is held straight back.
In females and immatures, the vent will be underneath the carapace.

I would say it is ferox, but for sex id I would have to see a ventral picture

deffinitely apalone ferox, florida softy. nice grab. id say male just cause of the length of the tail.

nice pickup, but monitor him with your fish daily. he'll eat one eventually.

Thanks. I assumed it would be a ferox. Chill temperament thus far and minds his own business. But more importantly no chasing or seen biting attempts. I'll try to take a pic of the underside where the tail is to determine positive sexing. Appreciate some of the inputs.
