Soft Shell Species ID and Male or Female (7" shell)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's quite difficult to get a close up on the tail without taking it out of the tank. Softshell is always moving, lol. Does the girth and length give it a good indication of sex? I thought the size and girth of tail, claws/webbing, and markings on shell is a good reference for sexing. These are about as good of pics I can get for the day.

Anyone know for sure based on these pics? No online definitions please as I can look those up as well. Thanks.

Male. No doubt!

Agreed, after educating myself further. it's a male for sure. I was able to see the opening near the tip of the tail. Tail thickness and length surpassing the carapace is always a giveaway. Makes sense, it's got to reach to get where it needs to go, lol. I'm so glad it's a dude, as a female would be unmanageable due to sheer size.
