I bought this "hydrolycus scomberoides" from a local seller. After a couple hours of watching it in my tank, I realize, it doesn't have that typical black spot at the pectoral fins. Right now, it's about 5" long & 6 months.

I'm leaning more towards the tat than the armatus, but I need help in confirming this..

Here are some pictures!

I was initially hoping to buy a Scomb, but on the positive outlook, I got a better deal for the price I paid + I won't have to be scared of having to wake up one morning to a scomb who died of the "sudden death" 2 years down the line :D

Yeah, that is a tat and nice looking too....The gold sheen gives it away as a tat.

thanks! :D

btw, what gold sheen are you talking about? I must have read close to a dozen threads on IDing payara's, but these were the most helpful, in my opinion:

1) tats have similar adipose fin color to that of their caudal fin (armatus' adipose fins have very vibrant orange)
2) swims at an angle, as opposed to the balanced stance of the armatus

Looks just like the Tat that I brought home not knowing it was sick, Woke up the next morning and he was dead, But still a great pick up man.

looks like a tat to me as well.

you lucky dog you. I love tats

Yeah, its a Tat I have a couple in one of my ray tanks.

Thanks for the confirmation guys! I'm really excited about this one... it's not so short lived, but doesn't get ridiculously like his big brother. Don't get me wrong- if I had the funds to take care of a armatus, I would! But this tat will do just fine for me :D

Sadly that wasn't my only bad experience :irked: I had three Scombs die from sudden death, an 8 incher and two 4 inchers, I refused to keep that species after that happened. Then I went and bought that Tat that I was talking about, And apparently my water parameters weren't what they were the week before so that was a disaster as well. I kind of left the hobby for a while after that happened, But now I'm back and setting up a Grow Out for an Armatus :D Keeping Payara is a learning experience with every species, It takes time to know exactly how to keep them healthy. But you make sure to keep us updated on that lil' beast of yours :headbang2
