IMO a trimac and hatiensis grow too large to be housed in a 75.

But since you said you would upgrade a hatiensis or trimac would be nice in a 125-180 gallon tank. Since you are upgrading I would keep the grammodes in the 75. A pair of Grammodes get a little large for a 55 IMO.

a nice baby flowerhorn. i love watching them develop! going from a plain small 1 inch fish to a beautiful 5 inch fish with a nice kok is a wonderful feeling. taking pics of it along the way so you can look back ofc.

but if that doesn't fancy you then go with a midas. can't go wrong with one.

keep in mind haits and grammodes are slow growers and a 55 isnt big enough for a single full grown grammodes imo. Haitensis are one of my favorite fish but Im not patient and dont have alot of tanks so i cant justify owning one at the moment. Either way you cant go wrong with any of your original three choices, just pick the one you like the most.

A grammodes is not a great choice for a wet pet. They tend to be shy and only once have I seen one be outgoing and a glassbanger. They are way too fish aggressive to keep a pair in a 55. One will eventually get destroyed by the other.
A Hait will be harder than the Mac or midas for you to keep due to bloat issues.

between the tri and the Midas i voted The mac.

Ok.....So here is the plan I think:

I'm going to get 3 Hait's for the 75 gallon (the guy said he will do his best to sex them, so I'm sure I'll get a male in the end). I'll grow them out for a bit and pick the nicest male of the lot and sell the others.

Going to get 4 small Grammodes for the 55 and grow out until a pair forms, then remove the other 2. If no pairs, I'll just keep the nicest male.

And I'm going to get a Lyonsi to add to my 100 gallon.

If the Hait and/or Grammodes grow too large for their tanks, the Hait will go in the 100, and the Grammode(s) in the 75. But from what I have read, it will be atleast 3 years before they will reach that kind of size, and Grammodes rarely break the 10" mark, but if it does, I've got a backup plan.

And I'll have dividers handy of course :)

IMO a trimac and hatiensis grow too large to be housed in a 75.

Trimac no, Haitiensis possibly. Trimacs get 14" same as Midas so a 75g for a single specimen is fine, but Haitiensis get larger. One could grow out in a 75g, but it would be a tight fit for a male. Definently would go for a 120g atleast for a Hait.

Hmm I thought trimacs got to 16". Well learn something new everyday I guess. I must be thinking of chanchos. Now that would be a great amphilophus wet pet for a 125-180 gallon tank. All the attitude of a midas super sized!

I voted for the MIDAS.........Great personality and owner response.........To get a true TRIMAC these days you have to order from a person like Jeff Rapps......Everything out in the public industry has been destroyed with the flowerhorn genes...........

Iwould go for another amphilophus and not just a midas. I would choose the grammodes for a 55 and a cubans for the 75. I myself just got a cuban, lyonsi, grammodes, and a trimac from rapps and the grammodes and cuban are looking great. The trimac is just a OG fish and picks on my festeas all of which are bigger than him. I would consider the cubans, grammodes, and trimac.

Kind of leaning towards the Hait's right now. Got a price quote for $97 for 6 of them. Just LOVE those fins. I'm just really concerned about bloat as I'd be getting them at 2". Too bad they aren't as hardy as other cichlids, or I'd already have some.

Kind of surprised nobody has said anything about Grammodes (Mini Dovii). I forgot to add them to the list, but I'm looking at them as well. Could do a pair of them in a 75. They seem like really cool fish as well.

Maybe I'll do Hait's in the 75 and Grammodes in the 55.

Good call on the Grammodes... I have one in my 265 right now. They are def really slow growers. I've never tried Black Nasties, but heard they can be tough to keep with the bloat and all, however they are great looking once mature. Good luck to ya.
