770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get some cichla! Put some insulation around the sides and back if your that worried about heating. Like hulon said...the house is heated so it wont take that much to heat it w/ the pump and the ambient air in the room. Get some hot cichla growouts while they are available. YOu wont regret it!

There's nothing that could ever get me to live there if you're paying .40 kWh. I figured it and I'm only paying barely over 8 cents here in Kansas. According to the Georgia power website where we intend to move they're only getting just over 5 cents per kWh right now.

I know in the future I'll be able to afford a tank like that. I don't think I'd ever convince myself I could ever live somewhere like that. I wouldn't want to feel victimized everytime I pay bills.

HOLY MOTHER OF ALL TANKS!!
She must have had a hand in this.
NOW Im jealous.

The only pump suitable is a golden one.
And soaking the driftwood in the hot tub.. unequivocal.
Your stock list I like.
Cant wait to see the whole up and running.

I agree^^^ I was just thinking your tank is made out of very thick acrylic. Acrylic is a great insulator. Use a couple submersible pumps (they also transfer heat) and maybe a 300W heater and that might do it? I have the opposite problem, how to keep the tank cool. My 1" thick 360 holds in heat too good! Also tropical fish will do fine in temperatures as low as the mid 70's. Growth slows but no big deal, might even be good for the fish to give it seasons. Winter time let the temps drop a bit.

Nice big tank, you came back to the hobby. A couple of years ago, I remebered that you sold all your fishes and your tanks. I was a person who bought some of your fishes.

Look, I will drive over there and give you what you paid for the tank. No big deal. I will stock it properly and take some pictures for you :)

You show up with 90 Benjamin's and it's all yours. But I'm not so sure that putting a catfish that can grow to over 5 feet and weigh over 100lbs (Goonch) would be considered "properly" stocking it. I'd rather see goldfish in it, than a fish that can't even turn around in the tank. :grinno:

I'm sure he's just kidding about the goldfish. Right?

lol- I'm going back to my roots. If only I hadn't won that goldfish at the carnival when I was 8 years old.

LOL your probably right. He has a dream tank and is killin us with the goldfish comment just winding us up!

I wish I was kidding and I wish PG&E was joking with these electric rates...last time I used 1,000Kwh, my bill was over $300! I will start with goldfish and eventually find a way to make keeping tropicals work.

The room the tank is in is not heated...that's part of my problem. I'm thinking insulation will help quite a bit...but I'll find out this winter.

I hear you. Living in CA is crazy expensive. I love the Bay Area and all it has to offer, but these utility rates are insane. It's a tiered system but the baseline rates are really low. There was a recent reduction in the 4th tier from $.40Kwh down to $.34Kwh which will help, but I'm still looking at $70/month to run my Reeflo Hammerhead Gold and I'm guessing at least an additional $170/month in the winter time to heat the tank. To put that in perspective, running the pump and heating the tank in Georgia at $0.05Kwh would only cost $35/month! You could run 7 of my tanks (5,600 gallons) in Georgia for what it costs me to run one.

Thanks! I'm getting Nitrate readings, so I think I'll be adding a few fish this weekend.

Check out this site for info on legality of collecting/keeping native fishes.

And this one if you want to buy them instead of collecting them.

There is also a Native/Cold Water section here at MFK with plenty of info.

Thanks for the links. Doesn't look too promising though...seems like collecting a live fish from any body of water in CA is a no-no. I think my only option would be buying from a farm, but I'll have to read up some more to see if that's even legal.

I wish I was in your situation. I've read that running a fan across your sump or tank can cool it by anywhere from 5 to 7 degrees. A small fan would use less than 10 watts. You can buy a controller to run the fan when the tank heats up and turn off at night when it cools down.

haha- nice! I setup a 70 gallon after I moved out of that house, so I never really left, but it wasn't very satisfying...I needed something bigger and I decided to go all out with this monster. Anyways, hope all is good!

Any advice on what heaters I should use?

Below are the options I'm looking at right now. I would love to hear any feedback or personal experiences with these heaters. The Ebo's would be a rats nest of wires (if I were to run 6 or 7 of them), but I'm considering them because I know they are reliable heaters. I don't have any experience with the others, so I would really like to hear from you if you do.

1. 2- 1,000 watt JBJ True Temp- http://www.aquacave.com/jbj-true-temp-1000w-brdigital-titanium-heater-system-2732.html
2. 6 or 7- 300 watt Ebo-Jagers- http://www.petmountain.com/show_pro...gle&utm_medium=datafeed&utm_term=11442-523721
3. Innovative Heat Concepts 2KW- http://www.heatingyourpond.com/submersible-heaters.html
4. Elecro In line Heaters 1.5KW or 2KW- http://www.koienterprise.com/Pond-Heaters/Elecro-Heaters-p-523.html
5. Coates In Line 1.5KW- http://poolsupplyproducts.com/p319-Coates-In-Line-1.5-kW-Electric-Pool-Heater.html

I have not read any bad reviews on the JBJ True Temp heaters. Koienterprise is a member of MFK, why don't you contact them about their heater...
