770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The room the tank is in is separate from the rest of your house right? Why don't you just insulate the room very well and keep it at a constant temp with a space heater or two, I believe you said that you could easily run a gas line into there, so a small heater might be the way to go. My ex's sister did this when she was breeding reptiles and it was much cheaper than heating all their tanks individually through Wisconsin winters.

hi, awesome tank!
As far as heating it is concerned, as everyone else has said submersible pumps generate a considerable amount of heat, i've heard figures of around 50% efficiency for pumps meaning half the rated power is lost as (mostly) heat. On a tank this size i would be tempted to use a PID temperaure controller to maximise efficiency.

I mentioned a submersible pump too. :headbang2

I work on PID temp controllers daily for my job. This type of system is used for supper accurate control of temperatures, not efficiency. So if you want your fish tank to be at 80 degrees and 78 – 82 would be fine then a regular old controller is fine. PID is more NASA stuff J

I think a lot of us don't want the OP to stock goldfish :)
This is a great idea, I love it. Gas is usually cheaper than electric also.
I vote: Heat the tank this way. If you ever take a poll on the subject

The water has cleared up a bit, but the driftwood is leaching some tannins. It really hit me how huge this thing is when I used some brillianize to clean the acrylic...got a cramp in my shoulder towards the end of the cleaning- lol.
Somebody asked for a pic of the room the tank is in:

This is the best I can do in regards to a full tank shot standing directly across from the tank. The room is too narrow to get a full shot.

I'm having to clean the socks every 5 days or so...and I don't even have any fish yet! Not a good sign. One of the socks is 25 micron, but the other two are 100 micron. I'm going to buy the really long socks which should double the time between cleanings. I'm thinking they are clogging up so much because of all the algae that was on the driftwood.

The first inhabitants...not sure what they are...?

I propose mahseers won't need a heater. I'm pretty sure it won't out grow your tank.

What are you feeding them? Will they do ok on a pellet only diet? I don't mind feeding some market shrimp from time to time, but I definitely want to stay away from anything that requires live food.

I wish.

wow nice tank! Stock ideas?

As of right now, goldfish. :headbang2

I ran into a lady at a LFS trying to thin out her stock of comets and koi in her pond and I'm going to take a few of them off her hands this Saturday.

Great pictures! Love your house and pool. Looks like a great place to host a MFK meet and BBQ ;)

LOL- my backyard is booked for the next few weeks. All my friends seem to think the same way as you..."mi casa es su casa." I've lost track of the number of times I've been asked if it's cool if they throw a graduation party, birthday party, going away party, etc in my yard. I don't mind at all...as long as I don't have to feed and embibe everyone, it's all good. From now on I'm going to tell them, Egon (the background artist extraordinaire) wants me to keep Cichla, so I can't be feeding you all. I need to save up for the winter utility bills! lol

Goodness! The walls of your tank are as clear as Scarlet Johansson's cleavage in a spaghetti strap top! Absolutely brilliant man!
