Punching Holes In Fins To Reduce Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this depends on the fish actually.. I have noticed that fish with thicker spinage in their fins it often only heals and never grows. I've noticed with koi.

Spines and rays are very specific terms. Was it the rays in the caudal fin that failed to grow back? Or was it spines in the dorsal or anal fins? I am also noticing obvious growth on one of my boss' "dragon show bettas" after his fins were shortened by platyfish. They only have one, tiny spine in their body...so all of the fins are growing back.

what he is saying wont grow back is the small portion of the ray where the hole is punched, if you were to take off the complete end of the ray then it would grow back (in cichlids i have seen BOTH rays AND spines grow back with not issues at all), and how are you ok with clipping a birds wings but have such a hatred for this, (im not advocating this by any means as i dont agree with it, but i wouldnt necessarily mind that much if someone else did feel this was ok since its not causing any pain to the animal) clipping a birds wings is COMPLETELY taking away its most natural form of locomotion making it have to rely completely on its secondary way of moving around, this hole punching business is only slowing the fish slightly its not completely taking away its ability to swim.

I'm highly doubtful that the fin punching procedure ever happened. One more thing that he's made up, if you ask me.

Is there any proof that he's actually done it? Pictures? Videos? Someone other than DC talking about it?

Why would you even need to do it if you're breeding in ponds?!?

He states in the video that it's a trick for breeding large predatory fish in "100 gal tanks". He never states he uses this tactic in his ponds.

Anyone ever use this "trick"? Anyone know of anyone who has?

I call BS.

Matt

Maybe I just don't see it, but what does he have to gain from telling a group of three guys that he punches holes in male dovii fins when tank breeding them if he doesn't actually do it? Seems to me this would only turn people off, if anything, and be bad for business.

This is something that he's been talking about for years.

Watch the rest of the presentation with an ear for BS.

There's plenty to be found...

Ok, so I ask you, what does he have to gain from telling people he does this when, in fact, he does not?

I'm not a Don Conkel sympathizer by any means, I'm just trying to understand your thinking here.
