Question why do people feal the need to use the word retard?

FYI there are 111 threads right now on MFK in which the word retard was used at least once. Just my 2 cents...

I feel for your childs situation, I really do. It sucks that feelings will be hurt. But at the end of the day, it is just a word. We all have had some hurt feelings in life. I use the word, and laugh. When I do, Im not talking about a person with a disability. You make the word what it is. If it offends you, thats you giving it power over you. Why do you feel that this word relates? I honestly dont think the word is ever used to describe someone with a condition.

but seriously, i use the word retard and g*y all the time. and to me, they are just slang words. when i tell my friend they did something retarded or g*y, it has nothing to do with disabled or homosexual people, i'm just teasing them and basically telling them that what they did was dumb or funny.

i can see how some would be offended, i get that, but i'm just saying that to me they are just slang words to tease people. i get ts point though, but like some have said, don't assume people wouldnt' use the word if they had someone close to them that were mentally disabled.

Excellent perspective.
I've use the word referring to something that makes no sense. Like banks getting a bailout but not consumers is "Retarded". <--How does this make fun of a less fortunate individual? This is American English..
Like, "Cool" did not originate in reference to interesting and good things... We have an overwhelming number of examples of this. While it is not fair to the people who fit in the category of what the word may be most known for like "G a y" it really isn't fair to those who wish to exercise what is left of their right to "Freedom of Speech". Its not entirely their fault our society was raised on double meanings for words, combined with the idea of Freedom of Speech.
However there seems to be a lot of "Freedom from being Offended" going on.. which sprouted and grew from our Sue Happy population.
My Fealings, er uh Feelings are that its worse to stress and get your panties in a wad over the "words" of others, Especially when there is the possibility that they are using it for a different meaning than your stressing over.
 
We've always used this word. As long as I've been alive and speaking, circa the late '80s, calling someone this name had nothing to do with any disability. It means they did something foolish or made an obvious mistake. Anybody using this word to describe a disabled, challenged or otherwise special person is a little behind the times. You make fun of people when they screw up things they should have been able to control, not things they can't.

one search on forum for word retard shows 20 pages of threads with the word retard in them equals to 500 threads with retard

63 pages worth of thread listings with retarded in the threads somewhere thats 1575 threads with word retarded

I'm sorry, the quick search showed Results 1 to 25 of 111. For threads containing retard. Maybe you were searching posts?

But it appears you've missed my point entirely, and Im sorry for that as well.
 
point is if you wouldnt say it in a school , work , or church . then why would u say it on the forum
 
We definitely said it in school, church and extremely frequently at work. Internet forums and the hospital are the strictest place I know of.
 
I don't say retard very often, but when I do, I'm not referring to people with disabilities. That doesnt even cross my mind. It's just a word to me, like f*ck is. When I say f*ck I don't mean people doing adult things. I mean like, "DANG IT ALLLLLLL" XD You know? I think many people are senstive about the word retard, when they need to relax and know that isnt what a majority of people mean. Some do mean it that way yes, but you dont have to punish everyone that uses it because of those few people. Just my opinion.
 
Well, I for one dont mind the word Retard. It is a simple word in itself. Like *** or homosexual and while I type this I know that it will automatically be bleeped out by MFK. The people that it refers to uses the word *** itself as a self reference as well.

The word Retard means slow...it has been used in such a bad context that sometimes we lose the real meaning behind it.

Like the F Bomb...if I say I wanna F that girl, everyone would cheer me on. But if I said F that girl, everyone would be defensive about it.
