Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors. I suggest you do your son a favor and talk with him and try to get him to be more thick skinned...I realize that he already has a lot to deal with and things bother him but all through the rest of his life there are going to those who will say whatever they want to say and it will do your son no good to get upset everytime he hears something that he does not like.I don't use the term as a slang or as an insult(I try to be more creative when I feel the need to insult someone)but who here has not heard something at some point in their life that did not bother or upset them? I have plenty of times but I can't haul off and go upside someones head each time.

There are literally a thousand different uses for the slang version of "retarded" - (Quick note Usage-wise, it came before and set the precedence of the way we use "***" in slang today - used correctly, they're practically interchangable.

I can accept your point here and I also see the answer to your problem. Instead of trying to convince hundreds of people to change their 'lifestyle"(if you will). Change a few, Get MFK to ban/block the word as they do with some others

The world is not a nice place. If your son gets offended when the word retard is used, even if it's used in a different context and not directed at him, he better learn to toughen up quick. He'll get ripped to shreds in the real world. I use the word too, as slang, usually amongst friends when they act retarded. Not like I go around public calling people in wheelchairs retards. That would be just plain wrong. I also enjoy saying the c-word, and just about another other rude, crude, nasty, racial and offensive word you can think of. Does that I'm a mean insensitive person? Maybe. Do I care? Not really. I know how to behave in public and around strangers, so chances are you'd never hear me use that word anyways.

To some people this is just a word... but to other people this is a harsh reality.. people who care about what people think of them ....or how your words can hurt someone would consider this word to be not acceptable.. the words fat or skinny usually can be used with lighter consequence because a fat or skinny person is not usually doomed to this unless they choose to be... a person with mental retardation was most likely born this way or had a brain injury... rendering them this way for the duration of their life.. it was not in any way their fault that this happened to them.. anymore then any disease ...these people need our support and our sympathy and most of all quidence to learn and have some quality in life.. any one in my opinion who feels no empathy towards someone with this disability is no more or no less then your common bully..And if this word stirs up so much controversay.. isn't it more intelligent and smarter in general to use a different word..just common sense to me..
