Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors. It has historically been defined as an Intelligence Quotient score under 70.[1] Once focused almost entirely on cognition, the definition now includes both a component relating to mental functioning and one relating to individuals' functional skills in their environment. As a result, a person with a below-average intelligence quotient (BAIQ) may not be considered mentally retarded. Syndromic mental retardation is intellectual deficits associated with other medical and behavioral signs and symptoms. Non-syndromic mental retardation refers to intellectual deficits that appear without other abnormalities.
Mental retardation is a subtype of intellectual disability, although that term is now preferred by most advocates in most English-speaking countries as a euphemism for MR. However, intellectual disability is a broader concept and includes intellectual deficits that are too mild to properly qualify as mental retardation, too specific (as in specific learning disability), or acquired later in life, through acquired brain injuries or neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. Intellectual disabilities may appear at any age. Developmental disability is any disability that is due to problems with growth and development. This term encompasses many congenital medical conditions that have no mental or intellectual components, although it, too, is sometimes used as a euphemism for MR.[2]

I suggest you do your son a favor and talk with him and try to get him to be more thick skinned...I realize that he already has a lot to deal with and things bother him but all through the rest of his life there are going to those who will say whatever they want to say and it will do your son no good to get upset everytime he hears something that he does not like.I don't use the term as a slang or as an insult(I try to be more creative when I feel the need to insult someone)but who here has not heard something at some point in their life that did not bother or upset them? I have plenty of times but I can't haul off and go upside someones head each time.

its just a damn word. i dont know bout everybody else, but personally i have more important things to do than stress out about what people say.

sticks and stones....

What exactly was your point of reposting the definition of "mental retardation"?

I too searched before seeing this from you ^^^
You clicked further than wiki's original explanation. Proving you look too deep into things. You selected "Mental Retardation" beyond just "Retardation".....
Wiki says "Retardation" has different meanings In medicine, In engineering and In physical anthropology. This doesn't even cover slang meaning... You chose the meaning that Best Fits your Fit about this ordeal.

people get offended way too easy and i think that's a big problem with this world now...that's all I'm going to say

Oh about that slang meaning.....

There are literally a thousand different uses for the slang version of "retarded" - (Quick note:) Usage-wise, it came before and set the precedence of the way we use "***" in slang today - used correctly, they're practically interchangable.

Need anyone say more?

Heres the deal You are on MFK doesnt have free speech. Had this argument before . Ider say how i no we dont have free speech on mfk. But i dont want the issues that would come with that. IF you think im wrong ask around. You dont have free speech here

I can accept your point here and I also see the answer to your problem. Instead of trying to convince hundreds of people to change their 'lifestyle"(if you will). Change a few, Get MFK to ban/block the word as they do with some others

The world is not a nice place. If your son gets offended when the word retard is used, even if it's used in a different context and not directed at him, he better learn to toughen up quick. He'll get ripped to shreds in the real world. I use the word too, as slang, usually amongst friends when they act retarded. Not like I go around public calling people in wheelchairs retards. That would be just plain wrong. I also enjoy saying the c-word, and just about another other rude, crude, nasty, racial and offensive word you can think of. Does that I'm a mean insensitive person? Maybe. Do I care? Not really. I know how to behave in public and around strangers, so chances are you'd never hear me use that word anyways.

To some people this is just a word... but to other people this is a harsh reality.. people who care about what people think of them ....or how your words can hurt someone would consider this word to be not acceptable.. the words fat or skinny usually can be used with lighter consequence because a fat or skinny person is not usually doomed to this unless they choose to be... a person with mental retardation was most likely born this way or had a brain injury... rendering them this way for the duration of their life.. it was not in any way their fault that this happened to them.. anymore then any disease ...these people need our support and our sympathy and most of all quidence to learn and have some quality in life.. any one in my opinion who feels no empathy towards someone with this disability is no more or no less then your common bully..And if this word stirs up so much controversay.. isn't it more intelligent and smarter in general to use a different word..just common sense to me..
