Male or Female

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i was hoping for a male like yours hahaha (could only hope) i have two of them at the moment in a 50g grow out, both displaying similar colours. They just started getting a fair bit of blue in the lower fins which you cant see in the pictures but it looks like two females for me :)
At this size what would i be looking for in a male?

The best way is if there is spotting in the unpaired fins. The color and body shape can also help although they will fool you sometimes. Females of both the Nics and Ricans will show color in the fins and around the lips and face but nothing like the males. To bad your not around here I have a male growout from my pair that is ready to go.

Where did you get them if you dont mind me asking? been waiting so long for mine to arrive haha
Riverside Aquariums at campsie. They had a breeding pair and these were its offspring, there was about 10 left when i was last there a few weeks ago. Are you from Sydney?

It wont let me load a pic. I will try again later
Yea no worries :)
I swear its getting more and more blue everyday hahaha

NWatson do you have any pictures of young males?
ahhh yea thanks anyway, bit of a trip to come pick it up haha

Here are some links of my male when he was young. The larger of the thw two is the male. Sorry bad pics in these threads. Look at the fins in the pics there are a few where you can see spotting in the Caudal and dorsal if you look close.

The more and more you see the easier it gets to tell. I can see spotting on my little 1" in the tank with the parents....you need to see that in person or have
a really good camera to tell.

Another link of others with good clear pics.
