Grandma's Basement
I saw an ad on Craigslist for a 240g acrylic tank and stand for $500.
When I got to the guy's house, I noticed that he had glued 1" strips of acrylic to all of the edges of the tank and all along the bottom edge. He said he did this to make the tank stronger. I asked him if he had ever had any leaking problems and he said no. He also said he had the tank for only 3 and 1/2 years. I also noticed some slight crazing near the top front edge. Another thing that kinda worried me was that he had the tank only about 60% full when I got thereand didn't want to fill up the tank all the way so I could see if the sump was working. I asked him to put more water in and he filled it up about 80% to show it wasn't leaking but not enough to start the sump.

The tank has dual rear overflows and I was hesitating at first because I've only used canisters. He's got it plumbed and was using a 30-40g glass tank as a sump. He said that if I bought it, he would have to cut some of the plastic pipe and I would have to buy a pipe fitting and reseal it with some kind of pipe glue.

I gave him a deposit so he would hold the tank for me, but now I'm wondering if I should walk away from the deal. I just needed a new tank because my old one broke and it seemed like a good price but maybe I made a bad decision. The strips of acrylic on the edges, the way he didn't have the tank full when I got there and the fact he has to cut the pipe to move it have me kind of worried. What would you do? I don't mind losing my deposit if it means I can walk away from a bad deal. Here are some pics from his ad. I didn't see the glued acrylic strips from the pic.

Sounds kind of shifty to me... does it include the fish? If I were you I would ask him to fill up the tank he full way to check if it is stable.

Thats bogus. I sold a 75 on CL and filled it up for the guy who picked it up. If it doesn't feel right, don't go for it. You had to post a thread about it so obviously you're suspecting it's shady. IDK man, I wouldn't go for it.

Buyer Beware, have him fill it up to prove that it's hold water. I would also check inside the stand it see if it was water damage.

He had big aros in the picture, but he just had an Oscar and blood parrot when I got there. He said he sold the aros already.

Yeah I know. I just really needed a new tank so I gave him a deposit but when I was driving home, I was having second thoughts. There was too many questionable things about it.

Definitly shifty, the only way I would buy a used tank is if it was proven to hold 100% water, and no signs of damage.

When he filled it up about 80%, I looked all around and didn't see any leaks so I thought it was ok. But when I asked him to start the sump, he said he didn't want to fill the water up all the way because he needed to clean the sump. I took his word for it, but now that I think about it, why wouldn't you start a sump for someone interested in your tank?

Exactly!
