Help Breeding my Psyco Umbee

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try changing the divider and give the male the small size for a month. Then put together a cave just for the female and a slab of concrete or rock at an angle to spawn on. Maybe two caves just in case the male gets into the first one. After a 2-4 weeks the female should be comfortable and confident enough to defend her territory and know where her safe spots are to go when the male is too rough. Once that's established your free to start pulling the divider only while supervising them of course LOL.

I disagree with using dithers for umbees... They'll make short work of them. I've tried on many occasions. Another option is making a trapped door in the divider like I had for the general and I can explain that later if I need too. Good luck.

this is exactly what i was looking for. thank you fwp. what do you think about the partial divider thing with allowing her through but not him?

I agree with the dither being pointless.

I tried a male JD dither with my VERY SHY young male Umbee and this is what I found about 45 minutes later:

I provided caves and stuff and did not expect that to happen. No wonder they call them blue freckled monsters... though mine doesn't even have freckles yet lol

For the dithers I'm saying either a school of fish (silver dollars, or I use tiger barbs with my midas) so the umbee can't pick on just one or several (4+) smaller cichlids. Adding one larger cichlid as a dither is a terrible idea, as you found out. The aggression is directed at just that one fish, just like he has now with the male directing all the aggression at the female. With a 10" umbee I'd add convicts (or something similar) that are about 3" or so. Large enough to not get eaten in one bite, but small enough that they're not a huge threat. Just something for the umbees to build a bond against.

There's a process to adding dithers, you just don't go pick one random fish and toss it in for a successful dither.

I don't like making a hole just for the female cause the male will try going thru and either bust thru the divider doing do or hurt himself pretty badly. That is why I use the trap door method. I make the hole large enough for both to go thru peacefully, then add a door using zip ties or fishing line for hinges and a string to close door.this has worked for most of my large pairs, there are s couple that I've had to use different methods. It also works as a territory divider giving both fish pre determined sides and all u have to do is let the door down for supervised visits until pair is bonded. And u can use your hand or a net to usher them back to their sides so u can close the door when done. Lol

thanks you very much for all the great info:) i moved the divider over and gave her a majority of the tank and added a couple pot caves

When I was breeding kribensis for a few months I had mad aggression problems introducing females to a male, eventually I gave up on being selective and thew in 4 females to one male, it calmed the male down and a pair or some may call it a harem would occur, though much larger it may work for you to introduce more than one female and throw in some smaller fish so they have a common enemy

I would not consider a jack dempsey a dither lol... a dither is something smaller peaceful and usually a school or docile large fish. a jack dempsey can feel threatened and attack just about anything depending on the individual, go look at a stupid place like petsmart that keeps their jack dempseys with green terrors at times.

convicts in a quantity more than one can be a threat for many fish depending on the individual, they're tough bastards and I would recommend against using them as dithers, large bodies tetras and the more docile barbs are great for dithers even if they die, it is what they are used for as dithers however that is sad...

in any case i'd add dithers and another female or two

That's a cool idea. I'll just point out the partial divider method I mentioned is still often used with success. I believe Aquamojo and others use it. I know a local guy that has spawned through a divider as well. Good luck with your umbees, I hope something works for you. :)
