Help Breeding my Psyco Umbee

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks everyone. i moved the divider and gave the female 2/3 of the tank and added a pot. put flat rock next to the divider just in case. ill prolly leave it this way for a couple weeks and then maybe try the gate method fwp mentioned so i dont have to get in the tank to pull the divider. really appreciate all the replies and ill keep updated on the progress. the female already appears to be more comfortable with more space.

I would not consider a jack dempsey a dither lol... a dither is something smaller peaceful and usually a school or docile large fish. a jack dempsey can feel threatened and attack just about anything depending on the individual, go look at a stupid place like petsmart that keeps their jack dempseys with green terrors at times.

That is the jack dempsey in the picture lol. Or what was left of it...

Man I think thats wrong because the Jack dempsey is going into a foreign territory and the umbee is probably bigger and established. I feel that one its wrong to abuse fish like that and two I do not aggree with dithers for umbee's.
They are killing machines after a certain size and established enviroment.

Poor Jack I would'nt do that but just my opinion.

They were both males, exactly 3.5", in a 72 x 18 tank. And yes, it was wrong... but I did not do it for fun, I genuinely needed a target or dither fish because my Umbee is so shy... he hides every time I get close to the tank and won't even come out for food. The picture in my avatar I had to take from like 30 feet away with a zoomed camera.

Excellent idea FWP, I have been using the divider idea for a while. Just lifting it up or turning it out of the way while supervising. By the way Fishman, my Umbee pair spawned this morning. Not a lot of eggs, but they have spawned. Im glad my male isnt psycho like yours. lol It does help that he was in the tank with 6 females and he chose this one, and since I removed the others, the 2 of them have been awesome together.

I really like the idea of giving her more territory to make her feel more comfortable, and to give hr more of sense that this is her tank. Be patient, it will work.
