7'x12' 1400 Gallon Plywood Stingray Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Few changes in the last month. First I removed the LED Grow lights and replaced them with the high powered Ecoxotic Panorama Led units. The grow lights where going out due to the splash from the pond. The new units have shields on the lights which should protect them.

I also needed some more mechanical filtration so I decided to build a filter out of a rubbermaid. You can see it near the end of the video. What I did is take a rubbermaid container, drilled the bottom of it and installed a bulkhead, put a few layers of eggcrate ontop of the bulkhead so it doesn't clog, and then used some blue and white bonded filter pads ontop of that. I then put a T into one of my circulation lines to feed the filter, a little 12"x14" filter cleared up my 7'x12' pond in a few days. Its easy maintenance, i just close a ball valve and disconnect a Union on the PVC pipe feeding it and i can lift the used pad out and drop in another one.

More rays have also been added. The current stock is 5 Leopoldi, 3 Henlei, 3 Mantilla, 2 Castexi, and 2 Hybrids. I have a few more henlei that will be joining them eventually, they are in quarantine in the 6'x6' for now.

Nice Nice.. always like reading up on this thread.. Great work.. Glad is all worked out and is going good.

I want to know something, What and how much are you feeding all those babies everyday...lol

you must be like me, have a good size worm farm going..lol

How did you go about spreading the epoxy resin? Did you use a roller or a brush? The matte that you used on the seams, did you spread the epoxy resin then lay the matte tape into it?

I actually feed them canadian nightcrawlers, didn't want to deal with a bed, I found a supplier who overnights me a big box of nightcrawlers weekly.

I used sponge paint rollers to spread it, regular paint rollers leave lint that will be transformed into a bunch of spikes you'll have to sand down. In the corners I used a brush first, then put down some matte, and then used a putty knife to jam the matte into the corners and spread more resin on top of the matte. I wasn't using the Matte tape, I was actually using strips I cut from the fiberglass matte patch kits sold at homedepot, think they come in 3x3 squares.

Good pics.
Is it hard to keep rays?

It's only hard if you try and keep them in small tanks or with inadequate filtration. If you research them and have a large enough setup then they are no harder to keep than any other fish.

Ok cool. Thanks for the answers. I ordered a 50 yard roll of 6" wide matte tape to do the seams in my 400.
