7'x12' 1400 Gallon Plywood Stingray Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actually feed them canadian nightcrawlers, didn't want to deal with a bed, I found a supplier who overnights me a big box of nightcrawlers weekly.

Who are you getting the Nightcrawlers from ??

Thanks Pete. You just need to use some marine safe epoxy with the fiberglass, I like to put several coats of the epoxy over it but you don't have to. I recommend Max ACR, http://www.ebay.com/itm/EPOXY-RESIN...459?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4831f75a83 Its relatively cheap and goes along way, I used it on both ponds. I painted over my fiberglass on both ponds with an epoxy paint but that was just for looks, no real need to do that.

The keys to making these 2 ponds leak proof I think was filling in all the seams with bondo, then fiberglassing all of them, and then layer after layer of resin, must have done atleast 10 layers of resin on that first pond in paranoia about leaks.

Let me know if you have any questions, I remember looking at your thread back when we started on that first pond. Will be nice to see it all filled up.

I'm looking into having the fiberglass chopped in rather than hand laying it. After applying the Permadri by hand, I'm honestly not up for it even if I didn't have health issue that prevent me from doing it myself. Do you think chopping it in would be an issue? Should I matt all the seams first before chopping it in?

How much coverage do you get per kit (1.5 gallon) with Max ACR? I'm at around 425 sq. ft without deducting the window. I didn't deduct the 32 sq. ft. for it to allow me some extra.

Sorry I am not familiar with chopping in fiberglass, I justed cut strips from the fiberglass matte squares that homedepot sells. From what I am reading your talking about basically spraying on the resin and fiberglass mixed together? If that's what it is I don't see why it would be an issue, my preference would be to roll on an extra layer or two of resin over it once it dries, just to make sure and get a good seal. I don't see any reason to do the matte in the corners before chopping it on, just make sure to push the fiberglass into the corners real good, I use a putty knife myself.

I got a response from the Max ACR guy about chopping it in and he said the slow cure of epoxy doesn't work well with the mechanics of a chop gun. You can see his full reply on my build thread if you want to see more details. Just have to see what his reply is now about applying the Max ACR over the Permadri and not directly on the plywood. Thinking I may have to at least put a sheath of 1/4" plywood over the existing walls to get a clean application.

I really like the way you used the 2x4s for the floor. I'm seriously considering putting in 2x6 (since my tank is 2x6 walls and it would mean less straight boards to find) over the floor. I'll just have to see if I have enough clearance for the bulkhead screens, otherwise, I'll likely go with another layer of 3/4" plywood run the opposite direction of the existing floor.

Thanks for your help.
