dorado still must be a bank breaker to import as juveniles though, i suggested armatus because of your tropical fish list they're probably the easiest to import as juveniles and won't require 5 digit tank gallon sizes.

i've never even heard of captive dorado so I cannot elaborate on them. it's illegal to own many game fish in north america without a permit, pike included. i said bowfin are easier to get because they are catagorized as coarse fish, you don't need the permit, plus they count as fish caught so if you eat pike you will only be allowed to take one home instead of 2.. tiger muskie are a hybrid of pike and muskie, I don't think you need a permit to own them but very few fish farms raise them and those that do tend to sell in bulk only My bad for armatus, I was thinking about scombs, which gets about pretty big and are very energetic. you'd still need a tank in the high triple digits to keep them. As i said they can be very aggressive with each other and often kill others of their own kind, especially in aquaria
There's a huge difference between what a fish will grow to in CAPTIVITY vs. what it will grow to in the WILD. Notice both of those pictures are of fishermen who caught the specimens in the wild. Armatus in captivity max out around 24"
well i'm not keeping any monsters at the moment or for at least several years so it's not a issue for me. I'm just saving up for my next aquarium, a 75-100 gallonI love your philosophy, but my check book doesn't
Nice. I'll be getting 75 gallon #3 within the next few months and then after that I'll be starting the saving process for a truly MONSTER tank

GATF- 12-14", 1.5-2.5 years give or take
Armatus- 12-14", about 1 year
Hoplias Aimara- Dunno, never had one... yet!
VATF- 10-14" 1.5-2 years or so
Mundi- 14-18", say 1-1.5 years
Arapaima- 15", say 10-15 min Lol
Dorado- 10-14", about a year
All are ball park but there are 2 factors here to me.
1) size you receive the monster
2) indiv. character of fish (some are more active than others).
In the end, the fishes face will let you know if its time or not (bashing)
My opinion, stick to your philosophy and buy for the tank you own.
GATF= Brevis ATF
Armatus= Ret Tail Payara/Scomb
Hoplias Aimara= Erythrenus Erythrenus, Hoplias Curupia, Mala, Gold Wolf
Mundi= (Similar to) Dat, Scat, Cichla
Arapaima=Gar, Snakehead (if legal), arowana
Golden Dorado= Brycon
There are more species but just throwing out an idea... similar fish that suit your tank.
