18 Tarpons in a 500g Square Tank

Yes. I never thought about that. I'll test his water params next time I go there.

With pretty reasonably/regular rain this would work- 500G is a lot of water and it sounds like it's catching from the roof. How much does it rain in Guam? Seasonal?
Tarpon (well, at least Caribbean version) are obligate air-breathers, so no matter what the O2 levels in the water they're groovy. Tarpon are also incredibly tough- quite comfortable in some pretty vile and/or toasty water. Their scales are heavy and their skin slime is thick, viscous.... and stinks- you can't wash it off your hands without serious effort. Physically and chemically armoured against half-assed husbandry ;)

Weather here is very unpredictable. I'd say it rains here 25% of the time. Never a week goes by without a drop of rain.

Very interesting how he doesn't need a filter for them to live. Very cool too.

5' L x 4' W x 4' H is 600g according to MFK's calculator btw
 
Sounds like my kinda fish keeping, and tarpon aren't fish that need a lot. But to be honest if he's not cleaning that tank at least twice a week idk how those fish are still alive.
 
Seems like a tank full of giant beta fish. I'm sure if it rains about 25% of the time and he has hoses and such running to the tank thats a pretty large WC each week. Enough to keep tough fish alive

No there isn't but the big secret is that these bodies of water you mentioned are not enclosed in a box.
 
I dunno why, but there's something different that happens when fish are outside. I put a tank on my back porch every summer without filtration or aeration, and have kept a wide variety of fish and invertebrates there. I can remember going over a month without water changes (only topoffs) and don't think I've ever lost a fish out there.

Inside the house is a different story... ;)
