I figure that I'll start a thread for the nano reef project that I'll be starting soon; I'll post any and all updates for it in here.

My current plan is to do a nano reef (under 10 gallons) and light it with LEDs. Due to space constraints, I'm restricted to an aquarium with a footprint that is less than 12" x 18"; I have room underneath it for a small sump, so I'll be adding one of those, too.

I'm currently looking at using the Aqueon Evolve LED Aquarium Kit (four gallons) that PetCo has for sale. I originally was looking into the Fluval Spec, but then I saw this one and decided that it was preferable due to the size as well as the lack of visual barriers on the front. The lighting is going to be replaced with stronger LEDs, so I didn't really do an in-depth comparison between the two included clip lights; I'll probably retain the clip light for moonlight purposes, though. I've been looking at the various LEDs out there, and I've decided that the various PAR 38 lights are probably too strong for this application, so they will be avoided unless someone has a suggestion for one that will not kill the corals. Both aquariums have a built-in sump of sorts, but I will also be adding a 2.5-5 gallon sump as well because I have the room to do so underneath the aquarium. The built-in sump will probably be used for a filter pad/sponge and live rock rubble, and the exterior sump will have a DSB, SeaChem Purigen, and a filter sock/pad/sponge as well as the skimmer (if needed) and heater. I'll be using at least four pounds of live rock in the main aquarium as well as a little bit of aragonite sand; I'll be seeding both the rock and the sand with samples from the 55 gallon.

For my corals, I'm going to start off with just zoanthids (specifically Zoathus) in there, and I plan on adding other softies and LPS as I progress with the build. I currently have a small frag of zoanthids (pictures to come soon) in my 55 gallon that will be used as the test coral for this build; there's one polyp that's all by itself, so it will be the one that is used to ensure that the lighting and overall water quality is sufficient. I want to add a crocea clam at some point because I read that they can do pretty well in a nano aquarium if given enough light and food (nitrates, etc.). I also will be adding a few dwarf blue-leg hermits and a few small snails for cleaning purposes. Lastly, I want to add a single fish, if possible; I was thinking that a clown goby would work because of its small size (1").

Any and all questions, comments, and advice are appreciated!

I just ordered that Aqueon aquarium because I noticed that the price goes up about $34 soon; I'll check it out when I get it and do a quick review of it for you guys. I figure that I can always return it if it turns out to be of poor quality although it looks pretty good online and all of the Aqueon aquariums that I've owned/saw are of good quality.

desktop PC light i used it on the same size take and i used it on softys and mushrooms worked out great

Have any specific details for the light?

I just ordered the heater, a EHEIM Jager (25 watts), and two 100 mL bags of SeaChem Purigen; those items should arrive by 1/10/12.

I hope to purchase everything else (rock, sand, sump, new lights, etc.) soon as well, and I want to have it cycling by the middle of next month.

Everything sounds good man.

Except the clown goby. I hate clown gobies. And you have four gallons - why limit yourself to one teeny fish. I would get a slightly larger, cooler fish. Get yourself an awesome goby pair or something like that for this tank. Get some yashas. I would still have mine, but my tank is too busy for the likes of them.

Really eager to see this. Nothing quite like planning and building reefs/planted tanks IMO.

I should have the aquarium soon; hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. According to the FedEx tracking thing, the order was initiated on 12/23/2012 which is two days before I actually ordered it, so who knows at that rate.

The clown goby is really just an example of what I was thinking of for a single fish for in there; I'd rather avoid crashing this system by overstocking in the fish department and losing my corals and clam. I'm game for anything that's around that size, though, so I'll look into those other gobies that you mentioned. The Purigen should come in handy with keeping the parameters at an acceptable level, so that will make having a fish in there a bit easier.

Do you happen to have a suggestion for the lights? I'm calling Aqueon tomorrow or Wednesday to get the specs on the light and other equipment, but I'm expecting the light to be too weak for most, if not all, corals since it's only 30 white and 5 blue LEDs.

This will be a very interesting tank build, I will follow, if the white leds are high quality leds then your good to go... for 4 gallons I think 30 whites should be enough IMO, but I thinking thier is a rating per led...if not mistaken.

I'm looking at the Ecoxotic EcoPico LED Arm Light for my light should the stock light not work out. My main question is whether or not to add on two of the standard 12K White/453nm Blue strips or a standard strip and an all blue strip; I want to make sure that I can grow softies and some LPS (focusing on zoanthids), but I also want them to look good. Any opinions?

I sure hope that this build proves interesting for everyone else, too; it's certainly going to keep me busy for a while.

The LEDs look pretty small, so I'm thinking that they may not work out.

You arent going to crash your tank.

You know what you are doing. My buddy was overfeeding two fish in his spec with no chemical filtration and never really lost a coral.

Im still rooting for a chalice tank here. Think that would just be sick.

I just got off the phone with Aqueon a little bit ago, and it sounds like the standard light should work for softies in the very least. The light is supposed to be better than the one that's on the standard 29 gallon BioCube but worse than the MH version. I use a single zoanthid polyp for testing once it's all setup and cycled. Also, the standard pump is rated for 98 gph, so I should be pretty well set for flow. I should have this aquarium kit on Thursday, so there will be some pictures of it then.

Okay, maybe I'm overreacting a little about the possibility of crashing it. I'm going to forgo putting an external sump on it for now, though; I think that the internal one should be sufficient with a few simple modifications.

Do you have any chalice frags at the moment? I'll try them in there if you have any.
