New DSLR: Critique/Advice Welcomed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, all up from here. The D90 is a killer camera. You're gonna love it.

Thanks again John!!! If you have any personal experience with this model please drop me a PM with any tips if you want to.

I have a d90 and a speed flash. It does the remote firing wirelessly. It will also use the cameras flash and can both be adjusted what I usually do is crank up the speed light flash all the way and shoot in M mode. I adjust the ISO speed and the f stop until I get good pics. Pick one spot in the tank to shoot and get the fish in that spot. I have black backgrounds so I usually get a spot that is just the background. With the right f stop it blacks out behind the fish nicely.

I wish I had any great tips but Im still learning myself. I have a d7000 which is very similar to the d90 and the only thing I've found is spending alot of time manual mode helps tons. I still don't have remote flash yet either an haven't used the onboard a lot. My style is to load up the card and shoot tons of pics lol. I'm the lazy photographer...

Aquamojo did say that commander mode is where you want to be for flash though. He seems to take some nice pics lol

your wolf tank background is stunning. What are the plants in it?

Thanks for the feedback NOLAGT! I did some more shoots tonight and deleted all of them. I have some research to do on ISO, aperture and shutter speed but am getting there. My eyes are bleeding from reading but it's worth it and again your feedback is much appreciated!

I have been shooting on only manual mode since the first pics, I saw your comments in Jasons thread and have been trying every since. The above pics of the dovii pair were no flash and in manual focus so I've getting better with that. Stay tuned for the next set of pics tonight once I'm charged back up (assuming I'll have any that don't suck lol..) What is commander mode? I've never heard of that before.

Thank you Chris. They are silk spider plants I boiled to leach out most the ink. I zip tie them over the returns from my pump so the loc-line is hidden and the plants move realistically in the flow. I use a T5HO light just above them to grow algae and make them look more natural and give fry something to peck at in between feedings.

P. dovii are ambush predators and spend a lot of time by the banks from what I understand so I wanted to replicate the plants that may have over the edge of a river bank.

Looks good to me:)

Thanks Ben! I know I can do better though :)

So this is the result tonight after turning down the setting for shutter speed (from 1,000 to 200) and pushing back the aperture to F16. Obviously the lighting is an issue because I still am shooting without a speedlight but the focus has improved x10 for a fish on in motion. I am shooting in manual focus without flash and it is still not the best but a lot better than it was.

What do you guys think/would change? Not bad IMO for not having a speedlight?
