New DSLR: Critique/Advice Welcomed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice pix. It took me 3 yrs to get photos like that on my DSLR. If you need a way to trigger your flash wirelessly and not break the bank, maybe look into a cowboy or yongnuo.

Thank you, I love the big guy in your avatar by the way. I will look into those, thank you for the suggestion.

I'd recommend shooting in RAW and then edit the white balance after you shoot (or choose the correct white balance before shooting in .jpeg)...your white balance is all funky in this set. I'm free most any day from Monday evening on, barring Wed. if you want to do a "photo shoot".

I don't want to waste your time coming up until I have a decent speedlight. I really appreciate your offer though, that's really kind. I have to shoot in jpeg fine for now since I had to order a copy of photoshop since my camera did not come with one. Once I get it, I'll be able to shoot in RAW and format from there. I think the white balance is off because of a lighting idea I failed at below :duh:

I had a 300 watt shop light over the tank pointed down which has a much more yellow hugh that other white light sources. I used a piece of cardboard to block the light getting to me since my reflection was showing in the pics. The good news is I "understand" enough to be dangerous and fail at other light source ideas though! I think that's good news anyway..

I am going to shoot a few at F8 without the shop light tonight and see if I can't do beter than the third set I posted. The light will still not be adequate but it will keep me learning at least.

I can bring up my speedlight and you can mess with it. I think the issue is the Keystone light. You can adjust your white balance in your camera setting before you shoot in jpeg, just try a couple and pick one that shows of the correct color.

Justin, don't get too hung up at shooting at f8 only. I mentioned that's the sweet spot, I know, but do try different apertures. :) I like you enthusiasm for photography. It's inspiring!

Can you bring it Monday to Jeff's? Maybe I can mess with it there for a few. I found a generic brand locally I would like to pick up this weekend but it would be nice to compare it to an SB-600 since there are a few used ones on CL if I am not happy with the generic one.

Thanks Gerry! :D I'm having a blast learning. I shot countless cycles in F8 and just could not get my focus right no matter how hard I tried. I have been getting better results like you suggest by just messing around with what works for me. These are from tonight (F10) and I think are OK.

If I tried the same settings on another tank like the dovii tank it would produce dramtically different results. I see why it takes so long to get decent pics with so many variables only experience can account for.

Having a good camera with no experience behind the lens is like your getting your first girlfriend all over again... I'm flashing everything, twisting anything that moves and hitting buttons left and right hoping it turns on lol..

What time are you going to be at Jeff's place? I can bring it but it will be a short shoot, as fish will need to come home and get acclimated. What sort of "generic flash" are you looking at?

I won't be over until after/at 6pm, I'll be leaving straight from work (next to Expo center in NE) so no worries if we don't cross paths. "Ritz" in Janzen Beach has either the SB-700 for $300+ or a generic "shyobooken"? or some brand for $70, the actual brand is written down on my desk at work sorry. I figured it will be better than the nothing I have now and can still pick up a SB-600 locally for around $200 on CL if I hate the generic one.
