Giving salt a try!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are definitely some small angel species you could do in a 75, but if you want a hippo tang, you'd better start looking for a 200+ gallon tank

Guess what??? I might get a used 75 gallon that had salt in it for years. Comes with tank, filters (saltwater used), skimmer, stand, and lights. I am only paying $250 for it. Awesome craigslist deal! Thanks for the tip I think I am going to take this guy up on his offer! Now so I guess all I have to get at the local fish store now is salt, dry rock and 1 live rock, heater, hydrometer, thermometer, and prime?
Now that I am getting a 75 can I expand on stock a bit? I am going to do 2 occel clowns, 2 spotted cardinalfish, 1 yellow or blue spotted watchman goby, 1 shrimp. Can I get a blue hippo tang or a angel with a 75? My local fish store says he would do good in a 75-90 because they max out at 11-12''. If thats the case it will be just him, 2 clowns, and yellow or blue spotted watchman goby, and shrimp.

What are you gonna use the PRIME for? You should be mixing your salt with RODI water.

Don't use tap water what ever you do. It will ruin your new tank before you even get started. Only use RODI water in salt tanks. As for the tang. That's a bit on the small size tank wise but if you get a small one to start you should be fine.......everyone upgrades within a year of their first salt tank anyway. Lol

I've used tap water for over a year in my tank with no problems, I even started it with tap water. I have no algae problems, all my corals are healthy.. RODI water is better of coarse but I haven't had problems using tap water. I don't see why everyone says never use tap water.. Yes I have read on why not to ever use tap water. But as long as you treat the water and use a phosphate remover, I think the potential problems a very minimal. Now I do plan on buying a RODI system once I move back to the States because I plan on setting up a much larger tank and investing a lot more money. I know it depends on where you live as well as far as what’s in your tap water. Maybe I just have been lucky but tap water seems to work just fine for me. I wouldn't say an RODI system is a must though..

I am going to get a small hippo tang. Why couldn't I use tap water?

I seen it. I am going to have my lfs set the salt tank up. That way nothing can go wrong, I think they use tap water at the shop. We'll see what they use. I can't wait until this is set up. I am going to love it! Just as a quick reminder this is going to be my update thread where I will post pics of the saltwater tank all year long.

I bet your LFS uses RODI water, most of them offer it for sale. It's safer to use it for sure. The only point I was trying to make is that it's not a must. You won't fail if you don't use RODI water which is the way he made it sound. Alot of people don't want to spend the money on a RODI system and also the amount of water a lot of the systems waist is a turn off for some people as well. I just think you can use tap water and still be successful as long as you do it correctly.. Now if you were investing thousands of dollars and up then yes I would say it's a must. I think that is why so many people get turned off by trying SW tanks, because people always tell them they have to buy all this extra stuff. The person adds it all up and says no way I can't afford all of that. Yes in the ideal world you should have the best equipment and by all the extras for your tank. It is whats best for your tank, yes it will reduce your maintenance, yes it will reduce your chances of having problems in your tank. But alot of things are not a must, you can and it has been done without alot of the things people say you have to have.. Just read and do a lot of reasearch. As long as your tank and fish are healthy, I say do what works for you..
