When 300 gallons just isn't enough......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for sharing, I too feel this is important for newcomers. I'm pretty new to the hobby, but I have had a few fish snap on me trying to mix different fish. Luckily I was able to catch things before there were too many casualties. I sadly lost 2 fish out of it all, but now most of my fish seem to be fine for now. Only time will tell how long my current stock could coexist with no major issues. I almost feel like this should be a sticky for newcomers.

Thanks and sorry to hear about your loses. I don't know about a sticky, but I think it's important to share all aspects of this hobby, not just the ones that say "Hey, I've got a 125 with 30 12"cichlids in it and everything is great". I envy folks who can pull it off, bit I often wonder how many hiccups and speedbumps they hit along the way. I think as long as we, as fish keepers, are quick to separate fish and address issues, there nothing really wrong with trying complex setups with multiple large fish, but there are limits and I found one of them for my setup for sure. It's funny as I sit and watch my tank today. It's almost like yesterday was landfall for the category 5 hurricane and today is bright and beautiful with clear blue skies. I just gotta be ready for the next storm to roll in....... and being prepared for it whether it happens or not is ultimately my responsibility.

But either way, if an unfortunate situation can help another aquarist out then I feel it should be shared. Lots of other forum members helped me and still do. The least I can do is share my experiences, good and bad.....

Losses are unfortunate, but they do happen. I only feel it should be stickied because it has some educational value to newcomers. That while some folks can pull off a mix that shouldn't be together, others can not and that tank size clearly doesn't matter. Most importantly when mixing large cichlids there should always be a backup plan and place to put a fish that may snap.

^^trust me, I wouldn't have minded a sticky like this around before i bought the jag:)

but your right newcomers can always benefit from threads like this, just to show what could potentially happen. And technically, since this is my first jag, I'm a newcomer too. All the research in the world can't compare to real world experience.....

It seems like everyone has settle back in and the tank looks great.

Thanks! It's so weird, because now my freddy and jd are everywhere the argentea goes, showing him around the tank and sharing food lol. Maybe this actually is a success story after all since this was my ultimate goal.......

guess everything happens for a reason...

happy to see ur setup

At least you had no casualties. I found my 5" pleco skeletonized one day when i got home from work. He was in my 27 hex with my 2 juvi firemouths. One is about 3" the other about 2". Everyone was fine when I went to work, later that night I found the remains. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is if the pleco died and they picked at him or was it a territorial attack.

That really sux. Probably died and the Firemouths jumped at the opportunity. Either way sorry to hear.
