We bought a 120 gallon tank from a man a while back and want to set it up into a freshwater tank. After buying the man said he cleaned out the tank with Lysol... Which sounds bad to me. What can I use to clean the tank to make sure all chemical residues are gone?

So you think that would kill the chemicals, even out of the silicone? And how much bleach do I use? Also, can I run a bleach solution through the sump to clean it too? My guess is that he cleaned the sump with it too...

Like can I basically set up the tank and run it for a bit with a bleach or vinegar solution to kill all the chemicals to make it safe?

I use bleach on everything .....tank, sump, bioballs. usually about 50/50 and rinse really good, but I never use it setup and running. I clean, let dry, rinse then setup and go and for good measure I usually run around 5x the recommended dose of declorinator the first time I fill it.

Alright. We'll give that a try.we'll be setting it up as a tropical community tank. Hopefully sooner rather then later. Thanks.

Jc, I have read everywhere to not use higher than a 10 percent bleach solution...but if Jess it worked for you? Also, do you know amy good sites for getting large hunks of driftwood that I can put in my tank? And any tips on keeping live plants? I've tried before, but they always end up dying or uprooting and floating to the surface. Thanks In advance for any responses.

One more thing: what would be the overall consensus as to how many oscars would be the proper amount to keep in a 75 gallon tank? I've heard many different numbers, and I've raised two in a 55 gallon before and they were just fine, but I was wondering what people here think about it.

Hello and welcome!

Ive read that too, but have always found a stronger solution works a bit better as i can work a bit faster. I usually use the smell test to see if Im ready. If I c an still smell it, I continue to rinse it. Same approach to filter socks and plastic plants....once I can't smell bleach I add lots of declorinator, rinse again, then go.

Live pants are not an area I'm very good at....most of the fish i keep make short work of them lol. but I do recommend using fluorite for substrate and around 1.5-2 watts per gallon for lighting.

Ive bought wood from Manzanita works, the driftwood store and some of my favorite pieces were from petco. Lots of good wood to be found in the marketplace/vendor area of this site
