My currently have a 120g FW puffer tank with no live plants inside the tank (my puffer has been chewing them up). My filtration includes 2 Fluval FX5 canisters and 2 AquaClear 110 HOB.

My goal for this sump/refugium is to:
1. Add more water volume
2. Refuge area to grow floating plants (again, my fish is tearing up all plants) and possible inverts/fish.
3. Better biological filtration
4. Faster maintenance of filter pads. For my canister filters, I have to disconnect it from hosing, take the whole system out of my stand, disassemble the unit, and I rinse the pads. Its a long process and I would like to clean the filter pads more often in between weekly water changes.

1. This setup does add more water volume.
2. It has an area for floating plants, fish, and inverts.
3. Wet/dry filter provides better biological filtration (plants help too).
4. Compared to canister filter, this setup is very easy to clean during weekly maintenance. All I have to do is take out the filter pad (located above the bioballs) and rinse it. I can even do it easily 2-3 times per week without stopping the flow.

I was thinking about adding an algae scrubber into this system, but it will be difficult to fit everything under my stand (tank + stand = 4ft high). Its also more maintenance than taking out the floating plants.

What do yall think about my idea? Its a 40g sump/refugium. Any suggestions?

Ditch the bio balls. Use scrubbies, pond matrix, Seachem denitrate. Just not bio balls. I think with a planted Refugium you won't need the algae scrubber. Other the. That your on the right track.

That should do it. You could make the chamber for the matrix 10" just in case you find yourself needing
More bio you'll have a place to put it.

Ok I didn't know about the pond matrix and denitrate. I'll go with pond matrix since its better for high gph. Here's a revised plan:

I would use the 24" section to pack submersible bio media and ditch the plants.

This do hickey looks a lot like my sump.

Nice job.

I think a 10" x 18" section for Pond Matrix will suffice nicely, the plants will lower nitrates and that area could support shrimp to feed to his fish.

Just my 2c

Uh...why ditch the bioballs? They're excellent for bio, don't clog, and last forever.

I think a combo of trickle and submerged media works best in sumps.

IMHO I think the real estate in a sump is better used with a bio media with maximum surface area. It's been heavily debated that bio balls have one of the lowest surface areas compared to most bio media.

Best submerged bio media is arguably the one and only Sera Siporax. Good stuff.
