Do any of you use this reel? I felt it in the store and I think this is the made in China version not the older USA that they stopped making, but it felt awesome, so smooth, I think its weighted to help rotation or something, all I know is of most the reels in this range I feel this one feels great. Have not used one fishing, any thoughts on it, might get one soon.

Most people in Hawaii fish the ocean shores with Penn reels. They really take the abuse of the salt air. Most of my penn reels have lasted 15 or more years. Get one and you wont regret your choice.

But are they the older made in USA ones or the new ones?

yeah i know these are good reels as far as where its made i have no clue it looks like the old school style but if its a new reel i doubt it will be made in america penn stopped making reels in us a while back good luck

These are the older ones. I believe the quality is still the same. Most reels are now made in China.

Quality is NOT the same.

Look on craigslist or ebay for older Penn "z" series like a 704z or 706z (manual) or the SS models which are made in the USA. Even the old "greenie" 706 or 704 is a good reel.

I use my 706zs and 704zs for everything from surf fishing to king and cobia fishing. I also have a beautiful greenie 710 with a manual conversion, sweet reel but slow. A 704z can be had for around $75 but its hard to find a decent 706z for less than $150 as most are in the $200 range now.

How can you say that the quality is not the same? I've had the green ones with the white handles whickh are great.

They arent "bad" reels by any stretch of the imagination but I would first look at the used market for a good made in the USA Penn as they WILL last alot longer.

agreed that the USA made reels will last a lot longer. sadly quality is now nearly always sold out for cheap manufacturing. Abu Garcia is still going strong in sweden though, compare a revo to a blackmax or silvermax, not even close.
