What is wrong with my V Bifa lip?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not to debunk what RD is suggesting to use (Maracyn along with Maracyn 2) but I have read a few conflicting reports as using this as a treatment. And because of that, I didnt go this route myself. Not saying that it doesnt work, but they were the only meds that were being listed as a med to use and a med not to use. Like I said, get on the computer, read do research and get a game plan.

With my Dovii, I chose to give him a dip for an hour, and while he was in the dip I thoroughly cleaned his tank and treated with Potassium Permanganate. But what the friend of mine has and what it looks and sounds like you have, is much worse. A dip bath may help, but you must fix the tank. This link below seems like it has some good info.

I had read that too about the M and M2 with this...I would rather be able to treat with the TMP stuff but thats 2 days out....I agree I should have probably ordered it just in case but I didnt see it mentioned till today. I thought some of the stuff I had on hand (nitro green) would work but I guess I was wrong. I want to treat the whole tank since there are a few different fish in there...wont do me any good to dip some and the others are infected.

The Furan 2 seems a lot like the Nitrofuracon green I had listed? I am going to try to go look as soon as I get off work and see what the lfs has.

Yes, it does. I can't tell you beyond what is stated on fishpharm about the combo, but the key with bacterial infections is using something that will treat for both gram positive & gram negative bacteria.

The biggest problem with any fish disease is that sans a proper diagnosis from a qualified vet, a lot of this becomes total guess work. I'm not big at using meds in a shotgun approach, but sometimes you can only do the best with what little info you have available.

Any type of bacterial infection that is an "unknown" is always best treated with meds that will cover both gram pos & gram negative as often times what actually kills the fish is when a secondary infection sets in from the stress caused from the primary infection. Hence the reason why one should never focus on just the primary infection, as in Columnaris being a gram negative bacteria. The reality is that no one can just eye ball a few pics on a fish forum & be absolute in their diagnosis, including me.

Hopefully whatever this is you've caught it in time & can turn things around in your tank.

Good luck!

My feelings exactly thats why I didnt dump meds in when I saw the bifa lip...I wanted opions and I watched it and since it was getting better I felt good about my decision. Thanks RD and madness for the help!

And on the temp thing what I had read made it seem like high temps 85deg was an issue...didnt think 80 was but I turned down the heaters to 75 now.

Looks like your on the right track. Good luck.

Quick side question though. You said you have how many tanks in your office? If you dont mind me asking, what do you do that 1) can give you an office large enough 2) gives you enough time to maintain 3) allows you to play with your fish instead of working. LOL

Oilfield Supply company...im the CFO...my mom is the CEO and owner...I have 3 120's in my office and the office next to mine has the rest on pallet racks. I get to work at 7 to tend to my fish before work and try not get caught to much "playing" with them the rest of the day. I keep my tanks mostly bare bottom and have 5 55gal drums with water on stand by. I use a mag 18 and a garden hose to drain and fill the tanks and with bare bottoms painted I have no gravel to vac. This tank does becasue it had geos in it for a bit and I didnt paint the bottom before I set it up and they didnt like the clear glass bottom.

Here is a bunch of vids of some of the tanks...and some of the setups...it has changed some since but you can get a feel for what im working with.

At home I had a 240 that is being replaced with a 374 (96x30x30) once its built (acrylic being built by titan old tenecore people). The wife said only one tank at home so its big...and i have a 300gallon pond outside.

Filling from today's 50% water change before I leave the office. The one lfs that I think would have something will be closed but ill try petsmart...they usually dont have a good stock tho.

3 of the 4 walls have full pallet racks...the remaining wall just has a 125 on a stand that will get another rack.

Dang, nice setup. I like it, you get to enjoy the hobby, and not worry about the power bill. :D

That is true sorta...work pays for it lol. and I have a ton of heaters...had to drop another circut in that room...and had to just switch out all my Marine land stealth heaters to the aqueon pros. 500$+ of heaters on there dime.

:jaw::jaw: I can only dream. LOL

Went to petsmart yesterday afternoon and as I feared the stock blew...not enough or what I need. Yesterday I added salt 1tbs/5gal (I dont usually run salt) and dropped the temps. Temp is at 78 right now...not sure if the heaters need to be dropped more or if its just that room, its always warm and tropical in there because of the other tanks but I will get the temps down to 76. The fish dont look any better or worse today...spots are still there that were and the bifas lip is the same and closing normal still.

Question is...Should I now wait for the good stuff coming tomorrow (TMP) or start dosing with what I can find today? I am going to try to get to petco and that other lfs to see what they have.
