I just ordered a 500w titanium heater with their controller from jehmco. I chose this brand because of all of the good reviews online and their price beat every other brand I looked at by $50. Does anyone use this brand? What are your experiences? It will be going in the 75 gallon sump running on my 135 gallon tank. (total water volume is ~175 gallons)

Mine just died after about 4 months of use... first, the controller started to display a temp of 130C. That went away after plugging/unplugging it a couple times but now the heating element doesn't work. They say there's a 6 month warranty, so hopefully they'll fix or preferably replace it.

I liked the unit when it worked, so hopefully it will get straightened out.

If I were you I'd check the temp everyday don't just set and forget.

Trust me. I almost obsessively check the temp in my tank. I just hope I don't have any problems with it. I've heard good reviews and bad reviews. I'm kind of on the fence right now on whether I made a good choice....

And as far as it being too much. It puts it right at or a little under 3 watts per gallon, which is the standard. Right now I have a 250 and a 300 on it. So I'll actually be running less than I am now. I just wanted the security of having the controller.

Just hooked up the jehmco controller and titanium heater!! Keep your fingers crossed....I have bad luck with heaters!

I would like to know where you get your wattage standard for heating? Never heard of it before and it seems like overkill to me. I use a Jager 300 watt heater on my 180 w/ no issues and have been running this for the last 3+ years w/ no issues.

To be fair it's not their controller. It's a ranco controller and they feel it's necessary to cover up ranco with their name. I have a ranco controller that works well. I got it from a different supplier, so it still says Ranco on it like when they built it. Mine has a plastic cover over the sensor which was suggested, because the sensor the way it comes isn't meant to be submerged. I actually just ordered another one of them I like it so much.

From this forum and many others I am a member of. You mostly hear anywhere from 2-3 watts per gallon.
