Which gar should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"Spotted" or the usual Florida Gar is the more docile of the two options and more suitable for a (large) home aquarium.

As you may already know, RTCs get HUGE. So, if you plan to get a large pond in the near future, an Alligator gar will also be OK. (Do note both RTCs and Gator Gars eat or try to eat any fish which they think can fit in their mouth.

Good luck,

Currently my rtc is in an 80 gallon. But I'm in the process of building a 7' diameter indoor pond. And eventually, like 5 years from now, building a massive plywood tank. So if an alligator gar won't outgrow my pond before then I would definitely get one

Wait until you get your pond built before buying any gars. You need the gar to be far bigger than the RTC in order to have any hopes of the combination being successful, and it still may not work out for you, so you're probably better off not doing the combination because it will be tough to rehome a large gar (unless you happen to be towards Pittsburgh :))

^^^ I agree I had 4 FL gars in my 300 with a large TSN and he tried to swallow THREE of them. Huge catfish and docile gar dont mix

you dont have years or 5 years to build your massive pond Rtc hit 24'' in about 14 months takes about 2 years to hit 40''.
i would say go with a spotted gar as an alligator gar from my own epic fails seem to not get along with Rtcs i have no idea why tank space wasint a problem either. spotted gar get along fine with them tho. hope this help some.btw the 7' pond good idea got pics of it? i wanna see:)

I just started gathering parts so there isn't anything to take pics of yet lol. I'm building a DIY filter with it too. I'll put up some pics once it's underway. Whats the max size on a spotted gar?And preferable temp?

nice DIY filters work the best if you do them right. max size ive seen was 45'' ive yet to see one bigger. as far as temp the higher it is the faster they grow lower the slower they grow i keep mine at 79F-80F seems to do well for me.
