It seems like female CA cichlids lay eggs once they have come into sexual maturity. They will defend them as they were fertilized.

+1... My female Nic layed eggs about 3 weeks ago, and her tube started to drop again yesterday. She's definitely ready to spawn!

I think the unknown geo might be gymnogeographus meridionalis. I believe Jeff rapps has had them in the past.

Oh my god cichlidfish I think you may have solved it perhaps...

thats a really good Idea Virgil, does it impair their ability to heat the water around them in any way? or does it just continue as usual. yeah when choosing my fish I decided to just choose fish that I like. ones that I found interesting and unusual and fell into the "semi aggressive" category.

How do you know that the small gt is female? I would like to know cause i have 3 of them that size.

Well I hope I have helped. You could maybe email or call Jeff for a confirmation. He's a really nice and knowledgable guy.
You could also try the American cichlid association or the cichlid room companion for a positive ID.

Thats a good Idea, I've never dealt with Jeff before, would he be annoyed if I bugged him with an ID email or would he not mind?

and Andy, I'm pretty sure the black dot on the cheek indicates that it is a female, that and the slower growth.
