As long as you have CLEAN surface area, that is what you are looking for. Rock is a favorite because it's got LOADS of it, pot scrubbers are the same way.
Fluidized sandbeds are also a popular route if your bank account can handle them.

Another thing I'll throw out there along this topic: The most common mistake I see if have the media for biological BEFORE mechanical filtration (like in the over flows). You need to have it AFTER the mechanical, otherwise you are just clogging up your scrubbies (or whatever you are using) and will have to change them out... which is defeating the purpose of established biological media.

Do they look like these? they say plastic scrubbers for countertops, dishes etc. I just look to see if they have any toxins on the label if not then I believe they are fine im learning 2:newbie:View attachment 749468 Im glad you posted that never thought of sams club hmmm have to go get me some thanks.

Hello; Mine are not the same as in your picture. They are labeled as Scotch Brite Heavy Duty Scour Pads Institutional Size by 3M. I got a box of 20 scour pads sized 6in x 9 in. The way the use & care label reads suggests that scratching may be what the caution is about. These large pads would work well in a filter if they are not in some way toxic???

Good point, thats why i use fluval pre filter ceramic, then my 20-30ppi sponge then 2+lbs of ac/fluval ceramic bio. The aquaclear bio is 9$ for 2 decent size bags. I run 4 bags and loads of fluval ceramic media, the rena media is sooooo expensive, esp the little stars!

if you can somehow get some bio floss into the wiffle ball somehow that would be great.

I believe they are referring to scratching of the glass, but if you are unsure just email Scotch Brite for the MSDS info. I have known a few people to use scrubbies and they have always said that if they get it wet and there are no soap bubbles it's safe, if you get bubbles then the scrubbies are soap infused and no good.
