Gar feeding habits

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
are crickets a good option for gars that are still eating live? i tried giving him a meal worm but it sank too quickly. just trying to vary its diet

What pellets do you all feed your gars?
I have done some research on this and what I have found out is that a lot of people use Hikari floating food sticks and jumbo carnisticks (based on size of gar) or NLS extra large floating pellets. NLS has better nutrient density and uses higher quality ingredients (whole fish and krill instead of just meal) but it is harder to get them to switch to NLS because the pellet isn't as soft.

I just realized that his tank is probably a little bit too big, but I don't have a smaller tank thats open right now. I'm breeding tilapia in my 20g to be feeders for him in a few months. To counter the larger size of his tank, can I just keep a really high stock of feeders with him so that there are more for him to catch?

More feeders in the tank will make it easier for him to feed. I would put in a many as you can and still maintain the water quality.

There's no such thing as a tank being too big.

For small gars there is. Big tank and small gar can easily result in a broken back or a dead gar.

I added about a dozen minnows last night and only 5 were left this morning! It's stomach is bulging to the point were it looks uncomfortable. You were right about adding a lot of feeders. The only problem is that I already bought all the rosy reds from the 4 pet stores around here. Better hope they get more soon. Does anybody know if gator gars will accept live worms?
