Help finish stocking my 300

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Viejas sounds interesting... and 100 neons may work if I decide to stick with Amazons. My angels would go crazy and they'd likely be gone quick though.

C'mon knowledgeable CA/SA cichlid people I want to learn more about these fish and what might work in my tank!

I'll give you some more specific names to look into

1. Vieja Argentea
2. Vieja Synspillum
3. Super Red Severum
4. Heros Severus
5. Vieja melanurus
6. Cichlasoma urophthalmus
7. Amphilophus robertsoni

I know nothing about rays, but I would be careful not to add anything too pushy with the angels. You could easily do a few young severums and raise them out with the angels and geos. If you get them small (3" or so) they should be fairly peaceful. If you want some color, go with the super reds or rotkeils. I would avoid the mouthbrooders (Heros severus and Heros sp. 'Atabapo') because they get larger and pushier than other sevs, IMO.

If you like the green terrors, there are a few different acaras that would probably work alright in your tank. Blue acaras are an old favorite and they're fairly peaceful compared to green terrors. There are also things like Aequidens metae which have a beautiful orange color. Most of the port acaras I've kept are peaceful (in fact, I used to keep my big male port with angels) but they aren't very colorful.

Additional peaceful cichlids would include the genera Krobia, Biotodoma, and Cleithracara (keyhole cichlids). You could also put peaceful Central American cichlids like rainbows (Heterotilapia multispinosa) in there. Uaru would be a decent choice if you keep in mind that they're large growing, require regular water changes, and will chew up EVERYTHING -- real plants, fake plants, sponges, driftwood, suction cups, etc. Also, Uaru like it on the warm side, so you'd want to keep your tank in the low to mid 80s.

I'm not sure how they'd do with angels, but a small pike would be okay with Geos. You could do Crenicichla regani which is a dwarf pike. Males grow 5" or so, females a bit smaller. They did okay in my 150 peaceful community with caves and hiding places.

Speaking of larger growing peaceful cichlids, you could probably do a chocolate cichlid (Hypselecara temporalis) in your tank as well. Like the severum, I'd get it as a small fish (3" or so) and raise it out with the angels.

I would avoid neons/cardinals because angels will gladly hunt and eat those. If you want tetras, go for larger things like black neons, lemon, rummynose, serpae, etc.

I see no reason to assume you couldn't put one GT in a tank that size and be ok. They can be aggressive, but most I've had are too lazy to try and control an entire tank that size.

Severums are a great call. Salvini as well (but not a breeding pair - far more likely to kill tank mates than the solo GT ime).

Thanks for the responses!

I will definitely be researching these suggestions and look forward to learning more about them.

Please keep em coming!!!

GT is out, not taking a chance. Neons were never a serious consideration. I did consider a decent size school of lemon tetras since my lfs has them cheap but I think I'd like a couple bigger more impressive fish.

i agree with chocolates, maybe a get few small ones, they might pair.bocourti, pearsei are both large growing.not sure if they would push around angels though.many people like oscars.would they mix well with angels? if you do get a large growing fish,i would get it small so it will be at the bottom of the pecking order.hopefully growing to accept the others.where are you in NJ? we have some great stores in the north

Uaru are like goats. They will chew and gnaw at everything. You'll need to keep a lot of greens and veggies in their diet.

I wouldn't do more than four. They do best in groups as youngsters or they can be shy. If they pair off eventually, you could just keep a pair. While they're usually a very peaceful fish, I did have some adult Uaru kill some quarter-sized angels once. There was no spawning going on in the tank so I still have no idea what prompted that. It's a bit unusual.

My only other suggestion is what I mentioned in my previous post: warm water (84F or so) and good filtration with regular water changes. They are prone to HITH if water quality slips. Remember that they have the potential to grow into large fish, and this happens fairly quickly. Mine were already pushing 10" after a year.

Ah man, I didn't want to hear this. Sounds like they won't work with my background. I don't want it all gnawed up... thanks for the heads up though, would hate to learn about this habit after the fact!

It's a shame, they fit the bill perfectly, and water quality isn't an issue since I'm keeping it pristine for the ray. I like that they come from rio negro region. I guess I'll just have to keep looking.

What's the background made of? If anything, they'd probably chew the paint off of it. You could see visible teeth marks on all my driftwood from them chewing on it. They also mow down sponge filters, then digest them and crap them out, leaving bits of sponge filter floating all over the tank. They're great fish, though, despite being so damn annoying. lol.
