bio balls vs scrubbies

I'm not cheap nor am I broke. Your statement does prove that you are ignorant though.

I didn't mean that as an insult. That's generally the reasoning I've seen for using scrubbies is they're cheaper. I tried scrubbies 1 time for a while and was unhappy with how much stuff they got in them, so I decided I wouldn't use them again. I did a little research and someone said it took them 42 scrubbies to fill a 5 gallon bucket. That would be 7 packs of six. I bought the 6 packs of scrubbies for a dollar a piece at the dollar store. That would be 7 dollars plus .56 tax. The cheapest I've 5 gallons of bioballs is 38.07 with tax. That means it's highly likely people would buy scrubbies, because they're cheap if they don't have the money or don't want to spend it on more expensive media. I suppose a could've worded it differently and said I use bio balls, but scrubbies is a cheaper option some people prefer. I think being able to keep the media clean and easier cleaning far outweighs the surface area advantage. You should really try to not be so offended by the cheap or broke comment. There are far more important things in life than how much money you have. Calling me ignorant is a blatant insult. It's to my understanding insults aren't allowed on here. As you can see I do have knowledge of scrubbies, so your insult is unfounded. As well as all the people piling on after you made the original insult. You can use your scrubbies all you want and I'll stick to bio balls.

I myself love scrubbies,i use both bio-balls and scrubbies and i really have never seen any difference in my water quality,to me the keys is good mechanical filtration.
I clean my scrubbies and bio-balls maybe twice a year, but i do have to admit i am a little anal with my selection of filter pads(layers of several different microns)which means i changes filter pads more but clean my scrubbies and bio balls less.Which in the long run probably is more expensive(never added how much i spend on filter pads)but very easy maintenace wise.
I did a small test a few years back on both my 180 gallons, both have the exact same wet /dry but one came with bio-balls and i bought scrubbies for the other one,the only difference i saw was the scrubbies cycled faster than the bio balls(which is probably where the surface area comes into play)but since then(3 years later)both tanks water quality is almost identical and maintenance is the same.
So i guess the answer to me would be if they were the same price i would buy what was available at the time,No type of filtration is without pros or cons, just pick what works best for you.

8 bux for 7 packs of scrubbies to fill up a 5 gallon bucket vs 40 bux is definitely a cheaper alternative. In Canada cheapest price online for a 5 gallon bucket of bio balls cost 55 bux avg after taxes. Scrubbies u can buy at a dollar store so I dunno how ppl can say scrubbies isn't cheaper...

I'm using a large amount of bio balls 30 gallons + but I got them used for 75 bux. If I paid new price I would be paying $300+ for 30 gallons of Bioballs... No way that amount of scrubbies would cost me that much...

If they cost the same I'd use bio balls. Same maintenance reasons as everyone else has mentioned. Since they don't I use whichever I find for cheap (I got 5 gallons of bio balls for free, which seemed reasonable to me - mostly I use scrubbers).

42 scrubbies for 5 gallons? There are 40 pints in five gallons. 16 ounces in a pint or a tall can of beer. So a scrubbie is equal to one beer?
Nice job researching:thumbsup:

Figure 26 to 33 scrubbies per gallon, for a 3" by 1" scrubbies. Scrubbies are about 6 bucks per gallon as opposed to the bio balls at about $7.00 per gallon, not really the monumental finacially breaking difference in price as most think/claim.

As for all the crap that all of your scrubbies are catching. Well with bio balls it's flowing right through them, then where does it go?

Wow it cost and takes that much scrubbies to fill up a gallon??? If they are that close in price I can't see why would ppl buy scrubbies that's meant for dish washing over bio balls...I'd assume maybe aaronb was referring to 42 larger scrubbies (pot scrubbers) to fill up 5 gallons? As for the crap going through bioballs it goes to the bottom of the sump under the egg crate under the bio balls. I siphon mine out once every couple months.

Bderick67 I might of been wrong on my research. I just found that in another mfk thread when I searched. You don't need to be so rude, insulting and abrasive in the way you communicate. I took the time to report you, so you can maybe talk to the moderators in a nicer way.

LoL! You play the role of the victum quite well, remember though it was your insulting post that started this. And yes calling people cheap or calling them broke is insulting, and anyone who buys scubbies does not have to fit into one of your two insults.

Just ignore him, he has a habit of calling people names and yet gets offended himself quite easily. That's why there is an ignore feature on here that comes in handy quite well.
