bio balls vs scrubbies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The scrubbie setups I have seen don't seem to break up the streams of water very well. Water seems to find paths through the scrubbies and stream down those paths.

Bio Balls seem to break the incoming stream of water down to drops of water very effectively maximizing the air water surface area and gas exchange.

I use Bio Balls.

I always wonder if these scrubbies were good but after reading this thread now I know. In other words scrubbies is the cheap alternative solution vs the better functioned more expensive bio balls.

I just ordered 7 gallons of bioballs earlier. I'm not interested in using scrubbies. I'll save them for dishwashing. I'm not cheap or broke, so there's no point in buying scrubbies unless you're in one of those 2 catergories.

I actually use both, i have a three draw system in which i use a combination of bio balls and scrubbies but also have a large amount of mechanical filtration prior to them... work great for me.

I'm not cheap nor am I broke. Your statement does prove that you are ignorant though.

I agree with Bderick. I prefer scrubbies over bio balls. Refrain from posting your ignorant comments.

I use scrubbies because of their surface area, yes they require more cleaning but I like them because they are stackable.

He is not ignorant because of using scrubbies. He is ignorant to the reason people choose to use scrubbies. Not sure why everyone thinks scubbies are cheaper. Has anyone calculated how many scubbies it take to make a gallon and then compared that price to a gallon of bio balls?

Oh I know, the syntax probably is misleading.
I just meant I agreed with you, then proceeded to give my opinion as to which I prefer

they both have pro's and con's. Bioballs provide an excellent oxygen exchange :grinno:rate as they spread the water so thin, but are basically useless as submerged our partially submerged media. Scrubbies work well for both setups imo. If people would read the op first post then money wouldn't even be talked about...people are so eager to respond but don't read...tisk tisk!

so the advantadge of scrubbies are more surface area and disadvantadge is they clog easier? i've always used bio balls with good results but just wondering.
