I got my WC pair when the male was probably 5 inches. He really began to shine with color and streamers at about 6-7 inches. My avatar is when I first got him.
Interesting, I would think the dominace of males out way females by alot, but I have now seen how dominate my female Trimac is. if she didn't have the two black spots on her dorsal I would assume she was male for sure. Yet she has no male Trimac with her, my male is alone, but if I put my male in with her there is no way she would be dominate over him! So your saying one of the big ones could be a female? That is why the stories of people growing Umbee thinking there male only to find eggs! I'm not saying I think your wrong but I find that really hard to believe males in my experience have always been bigger and act like males and vise versa when in a group and grown from fry.

To get fish to color up at small sizes has a lot to do with how well you care for your fish; water quality, amount of water changes, food quality, feeding schedule, possible tankmates, and dont forget genetics. I've had male umbees color up like an adult as small as 3.5-4" and then some took till 10".
