How to bring nitrate down

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hate to be the nay sayer but... the fbf filter I built did not reduce nitrates. It did however work great as a bio filter. here is the link to the build. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?195926-Fluidized-bed-in-a-wet-dry-filter

you need to use the correct media in the fbf! since placing these in line our nitrates have decreased big time!!!

also we are using deni balls in one of the fbf's with even better nitrate removal!

and peter just to clear this up JAD also do a complete nitrate filter!!! looks just like a fbf but has it own built in pump and is filled with bio balls
they say on the instalation manual that water is passed through these balls at a slow rate with no oxygen getting in the bacteria that thrive in these conditions are the nitrate removers in any system

so please re-check yourself got to JAD and ask? are they wrong!!!! are many other ray keepers that use the fbf all wrong too lol

anyway they work for us lol i dont care if they dont for you or ya not interested in them if the latter why post lmfao

Great idea. I suggest pothos. Grows fast and seems to suck out the nitrates. Keep up with wc or add a drip system, as well, and your water can be pristine.

Like I said earlier, the only economical way to reduce nitrate levels is via wc, drip system, and/or plant filtration. Someone please let me know I am misinformed. Of course, chemcial filtration works, too, but gets expensive imo.

chemical filtration will work to a certain degree. there are things such as nitrate remover. it doesn't actually remove the nitrate, it absorbs it into the media. the upside is that it's contained. the downside is that when it reaches a certain absorbancy load, it leaches the nitrates back into the water. this means that you will have to keep up on replacing the product, which is the same thing as doing water changes, but will cost your wallet much more.

I knew fbf's sounded too good to be true. They do great as bio filters but if u say u have to use the correct "chemical" media in them to remove nitrates then this is no different then my 1L of purigen in a reactor setup. Purigen does not remove nitrates either but it removes organic wastes that will convert into nitrates. Thus it helped reduce it by a lot.

40 or less? Keeping a ray seems slightly less daunting now...but their bio load is a LOT bigger than any fish I've ever had. Is ray poop long and stringy, like a plecos, or short and stubby like cichlids?

It is in a league all its own. Ray poo is thick somewhat long and spiral shaped almost like a cork screw.

Ok, so we are all in agreement that nitrates are not removed with bio filtration (although I guess you could count plant filters as bio)... Chemical, on the other hand, does absorb or adsorb (can't remember from chemistry class), but is quite costly. So, what paininthebutt is referring to is chemical filtration and the slow flow rate is for the proper residence time to contact the water to the absorbent or adsorbent for the "nitrate filter" to work. I am just clarifying for everyone so bad info doesn't get spread around. There is no miracle filter.

TMC say nitrates can be reduced by the fbfs!!! and like i said b4 most of ours run on sand not chems and thats what we used first (sand) and it reduced the nitrate levels by half!!!!

you either try them or ya dont? simple upto you but i know they do the job here lol

oh and peter "paininthebutt" are you a sheep lol as your trying to be funny an copy another members short form of witt

get a life!!!!!

Sand filters are a form of anaerobic bacterial biological filtration. These do not reduce nitrates!

Please google the nitrogen cycle. When I have a moment I will PM you a link and you can become educated.

lol peter ! well they did on our systems but then again tmc could be wrong and also jad systems could be wrong
i do understand the nitrogen cycle as been in this game for 30+yrs oh sorry forgot ya american

always right aint it same as the reptile trade over there if i got one 50ft snake i bet a yank got one bigger lol

and yes thats an insult to all that think they are better than the rest of the world like a minority on here!!

you are NOT experts and thats a FACT!! the only expert in this is MOTER NATURE and thats a FACT of life itself
