New pick up - green polyps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, Ive never heard of an "Elephant Face" coral but there is a coral called "Elephant Skin". Its a SPS hard coral.

To be quite blunt - don't add anymore corals til' you can keep the ones you already have alive for a month or so. They really struggled aclimating and just because they opened doesn't mean they'll survive. Remember - SLOW is good.

Like Kevin said - 10 gal way to same for ornimental clams. I'd also steer clear from Brains in small tanks w/ other corals - their tenticles are long and they can be very aggressive towards other corals. Try something along the lines of Devils Hand or Wisker Corals (duncans) much easier and far less aggressive. Alot of corals just aren't good beginner corals, they need specific stuff and even specific feeding times.

I understand ill wait another 2weeks before adding anymore softies then, that's a good amount of time right? Sorry for a noob question but what's the difference between sps corals and all those other names you all mentioned? I know "brain coral" is a softie though? Atleast what my lfs says I took pics at what I wanted to get in the future: lfs "brain coral" uploadfromtaptalk1332484248607.jpg

Next one "elephant face"

LPS are Large polyp stonies, in other words they build calcium based skeletons. SPS are small polyp stonies again build skeletons. The difference between the two, is how much tissue covers the skeletons, usually you can see the exact shape of a SPS skeleton, an example being branching acroporas. LPS on the other hand form large soft tissues on top of the skeletons sometimes massive amounts sometimes just slightly larger then the skeletons, an expample of LPS would be that brain coral you posted a picture of.

The elephant face looks like a finger leather... or maybe even a devils hand... doesn't really matter though. I agree with Otherone, it's not a bad idea to see if you can keep these ones alive before adding more. I know now that you've started adding corals you don't want to stop... we've all been there... but be patient reef keeping requires alot of time and care, and you don't want to rush in, filling the tank with corals, only to have them all die... not only an expencive loss but sad as well. If the ones you've added are still alive and well (ideally showing signs of growth) in a few weeks to a month from now then go for it, add some more staggering additions of course, as they do add to the bioload a bit.

Will do I'll wait a decent amount of time before adding anything else, I'm just to eager the tank looks so boring compared to all these tanks filled with with coral lol. So all of the corals I posted are all Lps then correct? Showing more tissue then skeleton?

Both of the 2 other corals are soft skeleton corals or "softies" - the 1st one is some sort of leather maybe a type of toadstool, the next looks more like Colt coral than kenya but either or they are softies. Both are photosynthetic (need good lighting) but are alil' easier to keep than the calcium skeleton corals as they don't require specific amounts of Calcium and Magnesium. They are also much more forgiving when it comes to Phosphates.

Example of LPS - if you were to buy Bubble Coral you'll see it open in the store, looks like a cluster of large round bubbles, touch it to move it and the bubbles go inside and you'll see what looks like a clam - the body that looks like a clam is the calcium skeleton, the bubbles are the Large polyps. When the bubbles come back out they will help produce food buy hosting micro algae, when solid food is in the water you will then see tenticles come out inbetween the bubbles.

thanks for the clarification :) here's an update the xenias base is kinda thin but it opened all the way. It pulses but does not pulse rapdily maybe every 5secs and doesn't close like a fist when it pulses more like closes a bit but you can still see through it the area where it pulses cuz its not closing like a fist. Is that fine? The green stars really came out even though I think a lot of them eroded away but they are really sticking out now! uploadfromtaptalk1332629587351.jpguploadfromtaptalk1332629715783.jpg

My clown fish is cleaning a side of a rock like crazy and dusting it off with its tail and attacking the crab if he gets close, she won't lay eggs though right since there is no partner? Dead eggs wont spike my nitrate or anything right? Could I give in and add another percula? I might just wait till I get 200g or 180g throw her in there and give her a mate.
Thinking it might have sparked her because I bumped up the temp
