New pick up - green polyps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only way calcium levels would really effect softies is if the levels were so low it was effecting the salinity or alkalinity. Don't bother feeding that often, will likely just spike your Ammonia/NO2/NO3 levels, which you want to be low or 0. They are "shrunken" because they are adjusting to the move, you have nothing to worry about will likely stretch out again in a few days to a week, smiliar idea as what happened with the GSPs. Your lights are fine, neither Xenia or GSPs need huge light output. Patience is a vertue lol.

Alrighty I'll go by this. The Lfs is making me freak out saying all of these softies should be perfectly acclimated in the tank stretched out and all in 2-3hours. And since not all of my gps opened up I'm still kind of shaken on that matter but now looking back it was because they weren't acclimated properly.
Sorry and forgot to add can I put in another clown fish or no?just wondering cuz at the Lfs they are on sale.

Because its such a small tank and they werent introduced at the same time I wouldnt put more than 1 clownfish in there.

How many gallons is the tank? If its 20-30 I don't see why you couldn't put a new one in, just make sure its a juvinille... aka small, idealy from a tank in the store that has more then 3 clowns in it, this reduces the chance of the new one being a "dominant" female, as if it is a juvinille or a male then there should be no issues, if its a female... there will be fighting...

Probably no then since its only a 10g. I know the row call for clowns though correct me if I'm wrong when introducing a new clown you make sure its smaller then the original one making sure it's already a male right? I don't think the tank is big enough though?

yeah... I wouldn't do two clowns in a 10gal. As a side note smaller doesn't always mean male, if it's smaller then the other clowns in the same tank, then yes, if its small but in a tank by its self, then it could be a small female... I do not believe that clowns will switch back from female to male either.

star polyps dont always come out rt away. its also normal for them to close and not come out for week or more. Dont worry. They will be fine.
No feeding is needed.. They can also be fast growers and can take over an area.. so keep that in mind....

Well, I was always told that clowns can be aggressive to other clowns if they are not introduced at the same time.

Well he's been opened for bout 3days now all the way. Ill post some pics soon. But he seems like he's still adjusting closing at random time but doing it less now. More gsp have opened up to! :D so since everything Seems to be going good steadily these are the corals I've been wanting to do but since I'm pretty new I'll need advise if it's a no go or good to go in my tank. I'd like to add one more type of Xenia (not another pulsing one), Kenya tree, brain coral , "giant" gsp, and an elephant face Coral. Not an elephant ear , I'll try to post pics of it from the Lfs they give some corals weird common names... And last but not least this one may be a long shot but a clam. I've done some reading on the clams and they like zoo plankton, filter feed and "eat" nitrates?? They need to be face up toward the light and like good flow. That's all I got anything big I'm missing? other then that from all the other corals I've posted/read about are generally easy to keep?

On the clown fish topic I've added clowns in at different time even 2 diff species together (very temporarily). You can almost guarantee the at Lfs the smaller one with the larger one is a male because with clown fish they change sex and the dominate clown fish will become a male as the less dominate will become a male. That's why the male does those spaz attacks on their back or sideways to the female to show them they are more dominate. But if left alone I'm not sure what sex the clown becomes I'd assume female?

I would say no to the clam, they need very strong lights, tank is to small IMO. yes clams are a filter feeder... but they dont "eat" nitrates really... at least no more then anyother photosyntheic symbyote does... in other words minimal. Brain/other LPS... you mite be able to do... if you suplimentally feed them, place them in good light areas, and dose for calcium/magneseum as they do build skeletons unlike most softies. I have never heard of an "elephant face" coral... is it an LPS? or an encrusting/plating SPS? As for the other softies, go for it.

Your right about the clowns. and yes a lone clown assuming its an adult (not juvinile) will almost always be female.
