I just heard this from a custom tank maker in my area. He said a customer had a $3000 pair of black diamonds in a 6 foot tank, but the width was only 2 ft. The owner had them for a while, then they died and the owner blamed the lack of width. Now the owner is having this guy make him a decked out 8x4x2 acrylic 450 gallon so he can get new rays.
The tank is going to be built on site in a basement.

I had previously thought my dream tank was 72x36x24, but if I'm ever going to keep more than retics, it seems like maybe I need to rethink. How do you even source a tank larger than 36 inches wide? How could you get it in a house without a sliding glass door? Properly housing for life, larger species is big work. I really respect those here who offer truly appropriate homes for large rays.

Definitely going to want something wider than 36", my preference would be more like a 8'x6' or bigger, but and 8'x4' is big enough.

You can try to find local tank builders or build one yourself on site: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?415713

Those 2 black diamonds likely died from stress due to the size of the tank combined with water parameters bouncing all over due to the amount of waste 2 12"+ rays will produce.

come on work it out

you can get a 8x6 throw a door you just measure your door and thats how deep you make the tank

my last tank was 84x32 and my door was only 30 wide so i made the tank 28 deep

when you are getting a tank made you dont need to stick to exact sizes you get what fits or pay the extra money and get it made on site

36 wide will last a long time 3-4 years even depending on the type of ray even a retic will need 36 in the end

Some of you guys...lol If you turn the tank on it's side, it will fit through the door. Make the height of the tank go through horizontally and a huge tank will fit. You could fit a 8'x6'x2' through any normal doorway.

mmmmmm thats what i just said

Or just assemble the tank inside your house.thats how it's usually done with sizes like that.
I know for a fact I could not fit a 8x6 into my house ,too many turns .

You can call a glass company get the sizes of sheets you need they cut them and you can assemble it your self even ,very easy and cheaply
