I'm going to keep this short being I'm hoping for a solution asap before fish gets worse. Thanks in advance for any help. Ammonia and nitrites very low, Nitrates Very high. I changed about 30 percent of water. It's a 50 gallon tank with a peacock bass. It has an Eheim 90 gallon canister filter with the True View built in back tank filter. The fish is about 6 inches in length and is responsive and eating but breathing rapidly. Could it be a disease from the high nitrates or just caused by the nitrate level? This condition may be caused by my ignorance and I'm hard on myself because of it. Please help if you have any ideas on what to do. Thanks.

I do 40% water changes in my cichla tanks. I would also add a circulation pump or nice sized air pump w/ airstone, sounds like it could be low on oxygen. I've noticed certain species of my peacock bass to be oxygen sensitive. I run eheims, w/ aquaclear 110s, and add circulation pumps breaking the surface to create oxygen on all my big tanks, except my tank w wet dry. Try another water change and added circulation/oxygen, that could help w/ panting IMO.

Thank much for that info. I think the fish might have contracted a disease from the high nitrate level over time. It's strange the white 'growth' type things on cornea come and go in a day's time. I wonder if an antibiotic med should be used. Other than what I described he looks healthy but is acting a little bit different in normal behavior.
