Tank Mates for Rays. (Armatus)

i wish armatus did better in captivity. i have tried a couple and just dont seem to do well. Mine did well up to about 18" and then during some tank maintenance i spooked him and he died a few days later.

They are amazing fish, they remind me of a shark cruising back and forth, the ultimate predator.

Calgary, would love to see that beast, what size tank do you have him in>?

My tank is 1250 gallons it's 16 feet long . The armatus adds grace and is a beautiful fish. You just have to own it to understand.they are alot different when they are bigger also.

For you guys that have problems keeping them alive add some bigger shiney silvery fish like tin foil barbs,the barbs shine seems to attract mine into chasing them.and I vary the different types of fish I feed him.some float like smelts ( those are easy) the bigger fish like mackeral are hard to feed and sink. He won't eat off the bottom.and won't take the sinking stuff all the time . The mackerels I feed are too big for rays. When he doesn't take and the rays get its such a sick mess. So I have to be quick if he doesn't take I have to remove before the rays pollute their tank.
 
just a quick update. so far so good. my armatus shows no signs of aggro towards any of my rays. it keeps its peace with his bigger tank mates.:)

Assuming you mean red tailed cats then 1) good luck as there is a lot of evidence of rtc eating rays )2) good luck as I have met people who's rays have killed rtc when the rtc gets aggresive 3) good luck as rtc get VERY big VERY quickly, you are gonna need some big filters and a big tank. What size are they in now?

I'm a firm believer that if it's just a tank mate you want they might as well have a job to do the red and black stripe tinfoils look great in a shoal and they eat ray poo what more can you ask for

Metallic silver, red and black fins. A very pretty fish look even better in a schoal. Go great with rays
