beginner ray!

it's more a reaction when you chase them around or suprise them from above. be extra careful when transferring them or doing tank maintenance. if they have the choice they'll just move to the other end of the tank. The stinger is in a groove near the middle of the tail but it depends on the species, so when they want to sting they'll try and wrap their tail around you to cut the skin with the serrated edge or penetrate and the poison covers the barb so some enters the blood once the skin is broken regardless of where the barb makes contact with the blood

Take care of does not mean they got what they need. Turtles in general die a slow and silent death over years...but i won´t argue about that.

I'm sure that's true for some people. I happen to have quite a bit of knowledge regarding reptiles as I have kept them for a good part of my life and was going to become a herpetologist at one point.

Motoro is really the best beginner ray for the price and their durability. The 3 smaller species are hard to find and cost more. If you can find a hystrix then that would be the better choice as they stay smaller. Rays are demanding so if you are not fully committed then go with the turtles.

He's in germany, hystrix are common and cheap there ;)

I did not want insult you. As expert you sure agree that 95% of turtles sold die in first year. Its a desaster. But back to topic.

I love rays. I wanted one since i´m 13 years old. My mom would never have allowed it. She was scared something happens and is till today. As i phoned her and told her my idea she was scared. I had to lie to her that i will buy a species with no poison...its not so easy.

I have never seen my rays even consider using their stinger. Very non aggressive. I have not heard of any hobbyist being stung. I've hand fed for a year.

No insult taken. I wouldn't say I'm an expert either. I just know a lot about it. And I don't know how many turtles die in the first year. I would guess that most people get them and get rid of them before the first year. I'd be interested in knowing how many people kill rays in the first year. I'm sure people buy teacups all the time and think they can keep them in conditions where they won't live long. My thought is that rays should not be sold in fish stores at all. If a person wants one they should have to go through the effort to find a breeder. That would mean they probably have done some homework on what keeping them really entails.

Usually whenever I hear of someone refer to their "teacup" ray I assume it probably won't make it very long. If someone can't do the research to determine what species they own then I don't have much faith in then providing the proper care either.
