I would love to be a part of a local club, but the nearest one is over an hour's drive each way. That, coupled with being married-with-children, keeps me from being able to join.

yeah same here..

There are some amazing clubs in Michigan! When I was a kid, my dad and I would drive from Ohio to auctions in Detroit...

yeah i know just can't go cause its so far away and with gas going up i can't Afford it... :(

No, talked to a few of the memebers here in milwaukee.. and it's alot of cichlid, and killie people from the sound of it.. plus we have a 6 month old... their meetings are less then 15 minutes away.. but we rarely have time to go out as is.

I'm in the Bay Area and not a member of any club, closest are San Francisco (and despite being a life-long Bay Area resident, I HATE going to the City!) and/or San Jose. I already drive about 500-600 miles/week for work, the last thing I want to do is add more driving to my life.

I have thought about trying to start something in my neck of the words, but it seems to be a lot of work and I have no idea where to start.

I really should join/start a club. Since no one I know is really into it, it would be nice to share with other like minded hobbyists.

i have one where i live but the meeting places are all the way accross the city and auctions are open to the public anyways :p and i probably wouldnt interact with anyone. but it does only cost $25 and.gives you 10% off at most lfs

Easiest thing to do is to post a thread on here and organize a meet somewhere in the East Bay. Maybe meet at an LFS and then head somewhere to get a bite and discuss what to do next in forming a club. Our club (CCA) had free use of a Park Police HQ for its first few years...but we outgrew it...and now rent a monster-sized high school cafeteria.

Also, Federation of American Aquarium Societies (FAAS) has a bunch of resources: http://www.faas.info/index.html

There's a great club in Sacramento as well. I think they still meet in the back room of a Round Table Pizza.

Good luck!
Matt
