A good canister filter that is cheaper than a fx5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recommend it because I use it. I have one on my 180 and one on my 150 for about 8 months now and no problems whatsoever. water is always clear and clean. I had an fx5 that always gave me me trouble. For the money you could get two of these for the cost of one fx5 and never have to worry about micro bubbles from the filter or other miscellaneous annoyances I had had with it.

You went from a fx5 to a aquatop??! I love my fx5 and it does alot of mech filtration with the 6 giant sponges and massive gph!

Im not saying aquatops are crap im just saying cant really compare em with fx5, especially the quality parts and solid valves!

They are just different and both have their issues. FX5 has higher material quality but I think the design could be improved a bit. Built in UV on the aquatop is a nice plus for simple water clarification. Some of the aquatop parts are poor quality though.

Check around Craigslist. I've seen some fx5's go for $100! Keep looking around and you will probably find some fx'5s. Other good options are a sump and a couple large canisters. For biological and mechanical filtration.

Have looked on craigslist for months for a cheap FX5. No luck. Its almost as if I'm a freak for keeping fish in my area lol. Hardly anyone sells fish and fish equipment/tanks. & I've considered getting a sump but I've heard they are disastrous in a power outage and I don't know anything about setting one up

I'm thinking I should go with the CF500 now. Its a better price and I'll have money leftover to buy another light fixture for my tank and better sand

Ima big fan of the Cascades...they don't seem to get much attention but mine are work horses...love em.

Agreed I've got a cascade 1500 on my 72 and it works wonders and it's only 150$

However he's look for a canister to go on a 120gal. He would need 2 cascade 1500 @ $300 to filter that tank property.

I will plus 1 for the sun sun, I did purchase a smaller model as it is for my 30g but I am going to keep purchasing them for all of my other aquariums. I have no issues with them at all!
