with open waters all around and between them... :screwy:

Since when was there open water between North and South America? Also, do you expect a tropical-semitropical shrimp species to swim through the Artic or through the Antartic Drake Passage? :screwy:

Of course this all doesnt even take into the consideration the great distance a small and relatively slow moving animal would have to travel just to get across the Pacific.

I would imagine these would not be able to pose any kind of threat to the ecosystem down there as I'd think the fishermen would be trying to catch all that they can of this type...Unless they don't happen to taste as good as the native shrimp in the area.

They were released from an aquaculture facility in SC. There's a good chance that accounts for the ones being found on the Southeastern Atlantic Coast, the ones in the Gulf are likely from the Caribbean Islands. They also have large scale aquaculture going on down there. It isn't like someone forgot to close a gate or a few fell into the creek. These areas are all susceptible to large scale hurricanes all summer and fall. Most likely, these escaped during a hurricane event. We know about the release in SC, it's the US and we have good reporting and monitoring for these kind of things from companies. Imagine how many have been released by independent companies that are unregulated in the Caribbean.

Only time till tell what happens, but the DNA testing will give us a better idea where the tiger shrimp are originating. My hunch is that the gulf shrimp are not the same shrimp released in SC.

Ive never had one but I hear they arent as sweet as the local white and brown shrimp. They are showing up here on occasion. They are also said to kill and eat native shrimps.

Head on down there and round up a bunch Kevin....We can't have them wiping out the better tasting native shrimp.

LOL,yeah....

You would think a natural predator besides humans will start to migrate in to eat them and things would return to normal, but I am not a scientist.
