How to tell fish gender?

Signs of sex vary depending on the species of fish. Was there a particular species you were interested in sexing?

This is a male jack Dempsey as you can see there is a beard running down his face and he has spangles on his body. I'll try to get some pics of other fish sexing pics. Don't have a female jd I don't think. So I will have to see what I can put together.

I would say thats a female. Beard pearling is on female Jack Dempeys, not males.

But yes, aside from venting there is no generalized way to sex Cichlids. Each species has its own way for the most part although some species are sexually monomorphic mean there is no visual difference between the sexes. Oscars are good example of this, you can't visually sex Oscars as you have to vent them.

For example: Female Convicts have orange/pink on bellies while males do not. Male also typically develop a nuchal hump while female do not.

This one is one of the few I know. I think gourmai's have dorsal extensions? And I read that you can tell a female bp if it's dorsal fin and and anal fins are rounded I don't think this is true though.
