I have a group of Myleus Schomburgkii and have a chance to add a king Henlei.... The ERH are about 4-6".

Just wanted to see who else is keeping them together? The ERH are skittish at times and more so when the lights go out... Would this bother the rays any?

Would like to see pictures or vids if anyone else has some to share.... I likes looking at other peoples set ups!

Here's what I have so far.

Hi eklikewhoa.
I have kept many disc Characins over the years including the species you mention, M. schomburgkii. These fish are completely ray friendly and provide a handsome sight in the upper\middle regions of the aquarium, however once the ray reaches a disc size of 12-14" the situation becomes very precarious for the Myleus.
Motoro,Leopoldi,Henlei and others in this size range will like mentioned in an earlier thread take them down, particularly large females with a disc size of 18-24".
For this reason I keep my Myleus rubrupinnis (Red hooks) in a tank housing a group of Hystrix. This works extremely well and they make very good clean up merchants and are in keeping with the whole South American look. Love twin bar Tinfoils, Asian Arowana and Tiger fish (Datnioides) but they look better in a Asian biotope rather than with South American Potamotrygon......Just my opinion!
Hope this info helps.
All the best!

It's great help! Trying to draw out some member photos cause I love seeing other tanks besides mine.

Have you ever had any of your larger rays come close to taking down a disc fish? I love the look of the twinbar tinfoils too! That's what they are called! I was looking for what they were referred to LoL.

Im hoping to attempt an aro as well in this tank and the previous owner has it with smaller fish with no problems.

My initial plans were to look for a smaller variant ray like the hystrix but the deal is too good to pass up.

The twin bar tinfoils scientific name is Barbonymus schwanenfeldii, the common tinfoil or redtail tinfoil is B.altus, I only like the former, much prettier fish than its cousin imo.
Regarding rays taking down disc Characins I had a 6" disc red hook molested a few weeks ago by my female Pearl, been living together for months but switched the lights on and startled one, this particular individual shot into the corner of the tank and the ray seized its opportunity, it gouged its eyeball out and removed the gill plate, I had to destroy the fish, this all happened in a few seconds, needless to say they now reside with the Hystrix.

LoL that's what I was hoping not to hear... I have 18 of them and hopefully if everything works out I'll be adding 12 more.... I'm thinking the school of them will deter the rays a bit from going after them.

If these disc fish are possible victims I'm sure the g.altifrons and guainacara. Steirgosi are goners....

I have 6 twin bar TF. Range from 6-8 inch. They stick together and schole very strongly indeed. Always swimming in a pack. And are lightning quick.
