So i am trying to prep for the future a bit here. I bought a small red dragon flowerhorn in hopes that it was a male and me thinks that it is female. These are my observations as well as what others have guessed and seen from the pics. The flowerhorn has a very definite black spot on the dorsal fin. This is leading me to think female. I was planning on putting it in my tank of other male CA's but now I don't think that is the best idea. She is currently in a 20gal long tank just to grow out but clearly that isn't holding her long term. Right now she is close to 4". Here's my thoughts and options. First option! I have a 90 gallon holding a 12" aggressive spit fire male of what I believe to be a creamsicle midas. The stores tank said red devil but pretty sure it is a midas. He's gorgeous! I thought I could maybe put the female flowerhorn in with the midas when she gets a bit bigger and see if they bond. He didn't do well with the convicts i had in there with him and beat them all down, so I don't know how he would do with a girlfriend. If they bond I don't want to be breeding some abomination of a hybrid either. Or!... Second option. I try to put my big midas in my community 125 tank and hope he doesn't destroy everyone in there like the war path he was on when he was first in the 125. Then the 90 is open to a breeding pair of flowehorns which I would like to do anyway, but not get rid of my midas. Then I just need to find a male flowerhorn. But would a 90 gallon be enough room anyway. Let me know your thoughts and experiences everyone so I can better guide this direction. Here's some pics of the lil flowerhorn and here is a youtube video of my midas a few months ago so you all get the picture. Thanks!

I did a quick search on Youtube and found this interesting. Here is a video of the same breeding experiment that i am questioning. The OP says he has 2 flowerhorn but the male in the first video has got to be a midas. The breeding couple a male piebald/creamsicle midas, and a red dragon/trimac looking flowehorn. I'll post a second video of their offspring months later. Look kind of like a fader. Just wanted to add this for my curiosity and see if anyone else has had similar experiences. Thanks again.

It technically can work but they will not often be nice looking, you will get a bunch of less good looking red dragons and a bunch of red dragons that will look like crap (black splotches everywhere) until they fade at about 5 inches.

On the other hand it is possible and works all the time. However I don't think you should just put your female in with him (it never works for me). I think you should use the divider method. Divide them WELL with eggcrate and never let them interact for at least 2 or 3 weeks. Then put the MALE on the FEMALE's side. She needs every advantage she can get as he needs to be impressed by her strength just as much as she does' with his. And if one of them has a lot more strength the other can get killed quickly.

Well I know my midas is strong. He's 12" and a pound plus of man fish! I've got awhile to worry about it. I was gone for 5 days and came back to tell my flowerhorn definitely put on some size and color. The black spot on the dorsal is even more defined and black than ever. She's looking great but still not quite 4". Thanks for the heads up.

Just to clearify, is a 90 gallon big enough to breed fish this size? Whether flowerhorn or midas? i would guess so. Thanks!

I'm coming back to this idea again here because my female flowerhorn is starting to get some size to her. She is about 5" and showing some interest in my midas in my 125. If she breeds with a Midas I would rather it be the one in my 90 gallon so not to cause more drama in my 125. Any tips on how to approach this when I put them together? Or should I let her get a bit bigger first? My midas is definitely at least 12". He's a big boy now. I have some egg crate at home I could make a divider with to try that at first. Advice is appreicated. Thanks!

I did this a while back if u go through my threads you will see

I went back and looked at your threads. Guessing it was the Son of Zuess (Devil/horn) thread that you were talking about. This you? Pretty much the same situation I have except flip the genders of the fish. I have male creamsicle midas and female zz. I'm just worried about the aggression of my midas, however my zz female is pretty feisty herself. She handed one of my grown male salvini's butts to him this last week. He's still hiding. So it might work! :)

So this may actually be happening now... not quite as planned. Different Midas, same flowerhorn. In my 125 i have a male midas and today I noticed this female flowerhorn with her tube is quite dropped. Oh man! She and the midas have been digging and moving rock like crazy. Any advice if this actually goes down? Id be curious to see how the fry turn out so i would try and preserve a few if possible.
