Need Suggestions for Single CA Cichlid in 125

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
an orange midas in this same tank was our motel office setup for years. still miss that old girl. she was full grown when i got her and she lived another 10+ years. never tolerated any company in her tank.
i guess i'm looking for that same type of interactive wet pet attitude but not the same species. still thinking bifa or zonatum. the barred species aren't grabbing my attention right now.

I'm telling you man, Flowerhorn. Amazing wet pets, if you can get over the whole hybrid thing they are awesome. I know the humps can be a turn off to some people so it is possible to get ones without them or small ones. They come in all different colors and sizes.

The reason why I said what I said is most people could not keep a little beani in a big 125 for years until it is bigger. The tank would look empty most of the time and most people would want to fill that space. Not all but most.

Zonatum are great and have an awesome personality. Mo had a big blue male and he was just as interactive as any midas. I hear argentenea are just as interactive. If you go that route though I would go with the Zonatum. I am with you not a fan of hybrids at all lol. Zo's and argentenea IMO look much better than any flowerhorn and they are something you don't see everyday.

Looks like Cichlid Connection has some large zonatus on his website stock list. Will call him soon. Mo's photos of his big blue zonatus got me interested in the species. Great looking fish. If they are as interactive as you say, then my decision is made.
Thanks to everybody for their great suggestions, wish I had room for all of them (except maybe the FH - lol).
I will post when my new acquisition gets here.

None of the Viejas will give you the same feeling nor attitude as the more interactive Midas. Far off imo

Reading Mo's posts about zonatus gives me the impression "Big Blue" was very interactive, not to mention amazing looking. Still my first choice for now.

All this will have to wait until after the holiday, way too busy with the motel for new fish acquisitions right now. I am planning to contact Gage at Cichlid Connection to see if he has a big male Zo available. Never ordered through him before but he has great feedback on the forums. His place is about 2 hours away and it may be worth a trip to pick up a big fish instead of shipping.

Thank you very much for the input on the less interactive aspect of other Vieja species, but I definitely don't want another citrinellum at this point.

Yep. I guess it came down to Vieja Zonatum...

But if still debating and you like colors + patterns, do consider the Bifa.

Of course they are totally different in colors so it comes down to what colors you like more. The rest is EZ because they are built similar except I think Bifas bodies are a little bit longer looking and zons a bit taller looking
