Hi All

Up until now I have only ever really kept Malawi Cichlids, but a friend just gave me 3 Flowerhorn Fry. They are about 1/2" right now and I have 3 of them. I just really started reading up on them so any advice would be appreciated.

For the moment they are in my 10 Gal grow out tank that I have used for my mbuna fry, filtration is a 10 gal sump. Food wise I am giving them a mixture of crushed flake and pellets, I will be picking up some frozen foods at the weekend. Temp is 78 and water params are spot on as this tank is always running and the last lot of Yellow Lab fry left yesterday.

Here are a couple of pics, they aren't great shots as the little fellers are super quick and quite shy so I have to sneak up on them . . .

Good luck with them, I'd raise the temp to around 82 and start dividing up the tank in the next couple weeks, cause even at that size they can be pretty brutal to each other, especially in small numbers.

BTW any idea who or what the parents look like?

They don't look straight up ZZ so they might be a mix but only time will tell. I agree with 82F as a good base temp. Sounds like you have a grasp on it, just keep an eye out for aggression. Keep up updated, curious to see what these are.

im still new to the fh thing but they are nice...i hope you have two females and one male....but i do know that when i got my fader fh and his hybrid brother thats a red texas x fh...they did good in the same tank with other cichlids such as m&f convicts,m&f green texas, male firemouth, female jag, female red devil, and a famle salvini....but when i put my female parrot in there with them....the two brothers became enemies....so i took the fader and the parrot out and put them in there own tank and now they are mates.

Coming from african cichlids I would tell you to treat them like africans on steroids. The same rule applies as overstocking goes but it is more extreme. Basically sucess with flowerhorns comes from either packing them together in a tank or keeping one to a tank. You will have fun man. Like they say ca's are "proper" cichlids so youll be hooked soon enough : )

Thanks everyone. I've started raising the temp up to 82. So far they seem happy to all swim and hide together but will keep an eye out for any aggression, dividers at the ready.

Hmmm as for the parents not really sure. Out here in the Middle East fish keeping is still a bit in the dark ages. The shops are not great and the knowledge is lacking. if you want to find anything in particular it is just a case of waiting till it crops up. Anyway on a shop tour my friend found 9 fry that the owner claimed to be FH fry, but there is always a possibility they are not FH x FH. Time will tell :)

@ Chrisplosion what does the term ZZ mean? Sorry of that's a bit of a dumb question.

Cheers
B

Looking at it again, I think it might be a juvie Amphilophus Sp. like Midas or Red Devil. Not sure entirely what they are but I'm pretty sure they are not Flowerhorn.

Don't doubt that just yet. Kamfa or Kamfamalau frys can look dead on the spot just like that. Even ZZkamfa frys...only time will tell.
